4.7 with secondary cats removed and S back Box
Discussion
Hi all, I don't suppose anyone has a 4.7 with the S back box and secondary cats removed do they? I was looking for videos to hear how the car sounds. I removed the cats on mine with the standard back box and am not happy with the sound but one of the more recent videos from Bamford Rose suggests I just need to switch out the back box for aural perfection. Sounds like a plan but i'd like to hear it first.
thanks
thanks
I just saw the video too.
So, I have a 4.7 with secondary cat delete and a N420 rear box, since it is, well, an N420 car.
I am sure the standard 4.7 box and the N420 ones are different, the latter being called "Sport Exhaust" but I am not sure if is it the same as an V8VS box.
Scuderia shows 3 boxes, in order:
- N420 and option from MY2011 (the most expensive)
- V8VS
- Normal

I have 4.7 with sports box. Started with cat delete x pipe. It was quiet till around 5000 rpm, cold start was sad. So I replaced back box with a Larini valved box. Weight and size difference is huge, factory S box is stupid heavy, the Larini is fairly light. Sounded way better, but still missing the signature Aston sound. Then replaced the x pipe with cat delete pipes. Now the car sounds wonderful. I gave the sports box to the metal scrapper. Unfortunately an iPhone doesn’t capture the sound well.
I would go aftermarket back box. Larini is very nice and you can still get it valved , and build qualify is superb. Quicksilver only non valved. Others out there as well.

Cheers both of you for feedback. Mike at BR was suggesting the parts number starting BG is the one to go for. I looked at the Larini and quicksilver box’s but would rather stay with Aston parts if I can. They do sound good but perhaps a bit too hardcore for what I want.
Removing the secondary cats made the car louder and at low revs it sounds great but as the revs rise it sounds more and more angry and metallic rather than the Aston symphony I’m looking for.

An occasional poster on here, Pete, spoke about his Vantage S in this video.

I am not sure, but that Vantage S might have the exhaust modifications which you are considering.

I don’t find the Larini angry or metallic at all. It is very smooth. With the fuse in very civilized. Removing the secondary cats made the car louder and at low revs it sounds great but as the revs rise it sounds more and more angry and metallic rather than the Aston symphony I’m looking for.

Here's a link to a thread about my exhaust mods which took a couple of goes to get it how I wanted it: https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=16... It's worth noting that I have the BR manifolds too which presumably have some affect on the sound as well as giving significantly more power.
and a link to the video I did at the time: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ngERuezVd5o&fe...
The thing about exhaust sound is that it is very personal so something one person loves doesn't suit someone else at all. I still love mine and it has remained unchanged for the last 3 years. I go on quite a few SCD drives and very often the person following me comes up to me at the midway break and comments on how good my exhaust sounds and that it surely isn't "stock". Err no. It's not

I have been thinking about you Pete. Can understand you have been busy. No one expected what has happened, but you and your colleagues are wonderful and brave too. Easy for me I am ashamed to say. Started isolation at the beginning of March, when those horrific pictures were coming from Italy. For us it has been home deliveries of everything since then. The Aston has been out a few times though recently.
Good wishes,
Alan.
Before I sold my 2016 V8VS (with secondary cats removed by AM Bristol), I did take an audio recording whilst driving along a local road.
Now... recording the cabin noise on an iPhone is never going to make hairs stand on the back of your neck, but trust me, this was one of the sweetest sounds ever!

I wouldn’t have dared go loader for risk of being anti-social and just over-doing it. But under 3.5k RPM is was civil. Above that, it was orchestral

Thanks a lot. Your car sounds fantastic although as you say you have both the BR manifolds and additional silencers after the cats which must have an impact. Tempting though it is to do the manifolds too I'm really just hoping to tune the exhaust note rather than dig out more power. Here's a link to a thread about my exhaust mods which took a couple of goes to get it how I wanted it: https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=16... I know what you mean about exhaust notes being very personal. I rebuilt the manifolds and exhaust on my Morgan three times before I was happy and the same on my Triumph Bonneville. With my 4.7 Vantage I'm really just searching for the original sound of my old 4.3. With the fuse pulled it sounded fantastic and the 4.7 has always felt corked/restricted in comparison. Pulling the cats helped in terms of loudness but not in terms of tone.

Thanks, even with the iPhone audio I can hear the depth to the note that is missing from mine at the moment. Mike at BR described it very well when he said something like "it can sound like a single angry trumpet rather than a orchestral symphony". That's how I feel about mine at high revs currently.Now... recording the cabin noise on an iPhone is never going to make hairs stand on the back of your neck, but trust me, this was one of the sweetest sounds ever!

From what I've heard on this thread it does feel like a no brainer.
Hi
I had sec decats and sports silencer BG33 5230 AC fitted to my 4.7 V8V along with one of Clive's remote switches to control the flaps and must say the car sounded fantastic but also ok on the cruise with the flaps shut
Cold start was also great (video attached)

Sorry do not know why only an image is shown
