V12 WNG - Anyone know it? Just Bought It. Upgrades?
Discussion
As per heading. Midnight blue DB9 Volante. Currently into Bamford Rose for servicing.
Over the next 18 months planning to put their primary decat and manifolds on with revised secondaries plus the full chassis mods - Biilsteins, rear roll bar and thicker under tray plates. Any comments on these, or knowledge of the car welcomed.
Not planning high lift cams with the engine mods though. Don’t want a ‘peaky’ engine.
Hoping the car will be a keeper.

For details of how far you can push a DB9, try someone on here with the screen name "Yeti" . He had a load of work done - even had the engine enlarged to 6.5 litres. Haven't seen him on here in ages, maybe he had kids and sold it. Or else got cheesed-off with this forum and bailed-out. Nice chap though, friendly and helpful. Worth a chat for sure...Over the next 18 months planning to put their primary decat and manifolds on with revised secondaries plus the full chassis mods - Biilsteins, rear roll bar and thicker under tray plates. Lewis's (yeti) last PH post was on this page. Not heard of since.

miley k was another enthusiast for serious modifications. He was perhaps unlucky and eventually became fed up with original AML component reliability, so left for McLaren. Think the last straw was the discovery of a gearbox manufacturing fault within the warranty period. It appears (only one side of the story) that AML said we are not paying, because someone has opened the gearbox.
There was another PHer with a highly modified DB9. I think it was eventually sold as modified and went to Australia.
Your best bang for buck is the installation of the DBS inlet manifolds. Made a huge difference to my performance and were picked up used for £1000.00 from astonmartinbits. A really good time to replace the plugs and coils at the same time.

For the sake of clarity yes I had some gearbox issues. Those pale in to insignificance compared to the issues I had with the upgrades.
Not one of my better judgements and not one I'd recommend to anyone.

Hello Mikey,
I can remember you did describe some details of your anticipated bigger capacity engine, there was a long wait, but after it was finished, very little more was ever said. All very diplomatic perhaps, but I did wonder at the time, whether there might perhaps have been technical difficulties.
My V8V remains factory standard. Even with a modest 420bhp, I seem rarely able to hold my 'foot to the floor' for very long on UK roads. Either there is traffic in front, or the speed laws make me back off. More and more power is fun, but the reasons I have mentioned seem to suggest, why bother.

It did run and came out close to 500HP but had a lot of issues with heads going, especially at the top of the Alps

I moved on to this, which as you say is nigh on impossible to hold the foot to floor for more than a few seconds

Probably time to dial it down to something more analogue

OMG. Look at that bonnet, its just flat with no definition. WTF, why did they design it with the shut lines like that - it's straight across the front - why isn't it a clamshell opening design? Those headlights are way too small and in the wrong place. What the hell is going on with all that plastic aero, it's not pretty. Don't even get me started on the size of the grill.Oh, sorry, wrong thread! ;-)

Ah, the fastest depreciating car after the Dacia with British Leyland reliability. Looks flash though.
Yeah so unreliable my two McLarens did over 30k miles in just over 2 years with out a single breakdown and no "rust". Unlike my two Astons. I also lost more on my two Astons than I did on my McLarens

But hey don't let internet Chinese Whispers get in the way of the truth!

I’m sure they are excellent cars but a different kind of brand to Aston in my opinion. The problem is that YouTubers such as Jayemm, Tyler Hoovie and Seen Through Glass have all shared their McLaren experiences in some detail and I’m sure that’s out a lot of people off, hence their lay off programme and precarious finances. That said, Aston aren’t faring much better financially. Good luck with the McLaren.

Very true - unfortunately everyone believes vloggers are gospel. As the age old adage goes , "bad news travels fast" even faster with the internet and many like to sensationalise minor issue to get clicks

Loved my Astons despite the issues.
Just about to move away from McLaren to free up some cash.
Came very close the a Vanquish S but something else came up that I've always fancied.
Hi Mikey - always admired the 675LT (best looking Mclaren). Unfortunately I was one of those put off by reliability and build quality issues after looking seriously into the change.
Currently sport car-less as 2020 became year of the camper and family travels, but looking at options again. Seem to be many bargains from both of our favourite brands.
Interested to learn what you’re lumping for...

TBH McLaren's marketing and QC departments really have screwed the company Currently sport car-less as 2020 became year of the camper and family travels, but looking at options again. Seem to be many bargains from both of our favourite brands.

The marketing boys seem to pander to the vloggers who then stitch them up when they don't get treated like royalty after minor issues (I'll exclude Schmee from that!)

The QC guys just need to actually do their jobs and follow the example of the competitors!
Beyond those guys I've found them to be good cars and good dealers, over my 4 years and 36k miles
I would have had another BUT depreciation and the shear speed of the bloody things put me off. Almost unusable on most roads nowadays.
I still have my name on the list for a 765LT Spider but doubt I'll take it when its due.
In the meantime I've dipped a toe in to Porsche after nearly 4 decades of car ownership and never owning one!
I've bought a 718 spyder to try and get back to a more analogue car, obviously a convertible one

That will tide me over until something really grabs my attention

Nice car the 718 spyder. Porsche lost the plot when they put 4 cylinder engines in after the 981. I had a 987.1 Boxster for 5 years back in the day and really enjoyed it. Only a 2.7 but fast enough point to point. The Aston is scratching a lifelong itch plus I wanted a GT rather than a sports car. I did look at a few 981 GTS before the spyder was launched but the premium over a standard 981 seemed steep. I’ll see how the Aston goes for now. I’m hoping it’ll be a keeper because there aren’t going to be (m)any cars like it again.
