i was all set to go shopping for a 2015/16 m5. there's plenty to choose from and they look very good value at the min.

untill i spotted a rapide on the road and looked how much there going for.

suddenly the bmw looks very boring. seriously the depression on the rapide though im hoping your all going to say its the best car ever and the deprecation has finished now.

any big issues to look out for on these?
anything must have come resale time.

i think i can live with the very dated tech and the fact that it a bit slower just because it looks so dam pritty.

Seek out the virtually identical thread, unless you’re the same poster?

If so, why the new thread?

because in the Aston forum theres likely to be a lot more people with experience of them than in the general forum.

The first reply to you seemed slightly abrupt. Not a normal Aston Martin owner reply.

There are a couple of videos which might be of help to you.
Not from a journalist, but a respected independent AM specialist (AML engine development experience).

A chunk of depreciation has taken place, so does looks great value now. Rapide owners here are enjoying their cars, some have had more than one, which shows confidence. The S model has some good upgrades.

Go with heart over head

Then when you’ve lived with an Aston for a few months, you’ll have talked the head into it as well.

An Aston of any sort will set your heart racing as soon as you open the curtains. An M5, is, well....

Let’s face it would Bond drive an M5 ?

Oooh daddy - there’s an Aston Martin

Oooh daddy - there’s a BMW

A great choice, 4 door DB9 mechanically and there are hardly any ‘real’ issues with them.

A much better choice than a ubiquitous BMW 5 series, even if it is a M5.

As above many owners are on their second ... I’d look for a Rapide S if in budget.

The Aston is going to be more reliable, will sound better, look better, and delight you every time you drive it.
Plus, people will smile and let you out of junctions.

The BMW is going to break down constantly and make you look like you sell drugs.

I wonder whether the fact that the responder doesn’t list an Aston in his garage at all, but has a Renault Clio 175 Cup as his present fleet might be a factor? The garage listing could be wrong, of course....

Interesting. Compared to a F10 M5 its a different beast. The tech is worse, the space is worse, the practicality is worse. But it looks great and feels more special. F10 M5 is fine but a bit barge-y and soulless.

I think they are very different propostions, I think the shine will wear off the rapide quite quickly and you will be left with a less practical, expensive to maintain and older feeling car. I also don't think the v12 sounds that great.

I would panamera.

The rear seat environments are very different. The most obvious one is there are 3 seats in the 2nd row of an M5 and 2 in the Rapide. Generally the Rapide is smaller in the back and looks fairly claustrophobic. Might not matter if you’re not carrying people often...

I would try to talk you out of it but I think it's a damn pretty car and seems good value in the market.

No problem. My comment wasn’t aimed at you, but obliquely at the first, rather surly reply to your original post. Besides, having now checked I didn’t see a Clio in your list

FWIW, my 2006 DB9 is the first car I've had in a while that had the same "rush" when accelerating as my e39 M5. The 6 speed snicks the same way and the push back is the same. Truly a blast to drive, with the same effortless torque pull and feel.

This opinion is so un-PH I think we have to call the police now, or something don't we?

Either way, I think you need new ears.

Even the newest (post 2017) version? And the sport turismo? They have come a long way from the early ones which were laughably ugly.

I have no attachement to the panemera, but I've driven all three in a variety of settings, and think its the best of the three.

If you still want talking out of the rapide: I cant stand the silver rear lights, which look like a crap aftermarket mod. Also, an AM does not make you James Bond.

But, overall, I would just go and drive one. Lovely a car that it is, its a totally different proposition than an F10 M5; if you had been considering an M6 or a Conti GT I'd get the cross shopping.
