differential whine

Does anyone have a DBS Superleggera or DB11 with a differential whine on a flat throttle between 70 and about 85 mph. My DBS has. Dealer says differential noise on a flat throttle is on all DBS and DB 11's. The noise can vary from almost non existent to much louder. They say mine is about in the middle. Its right on UK motorway cruising speeds and is very irritating. Anyone else experience anything similar?

There have been some similar posts about this on here, but regarding the new Vantage rather than DBSS or DB11. I’m no expert but I guess the current range may all use similar hardware in that respect. Not a big thread but hope it helps.

My car (DBS Superleggera) does not produce any significant whine at the mentioned speeds (but there is some whine during hard acceleration). Are you able to record it? I will focus on it next time I drive it.

Noticed it when I borrowed a new Vantage. Really put me off the car (but not the only thing that did so).

Ive only had mine a week or so and not had the chance to drive it any distance.
Will be having a run over the weekend and listen out for the noise you mention.

Had exactly this on my new vantage and it was very irritating. Dealer eventually replaced the diff. It’s much better but not perfect.

Whatever happened to product testing before release or do AM think their market is so old, it's customers are a bit deaf at their age?

Both the DB11 and DBSS have been in production for some time.
I wonder therefore, why differential noise has only recently been mentioned on here?

Is it a ZF transmission unit, if so, I think the same product is fitted in many different vehicles?

It is a ZF gearbox but, as it's a transaxle, I doubt it's in as many vehicles as the base transmission. Also, the transmission in the DBSS is different to that in the DB11; the DBSS uses a larger version of the ZF transaxle to handle the extra torque. I don't know if the diff part is different or not.

There are people that claim oil additives can help, if I had a problem with noise I may try this route as a possible cheap solution.

Drove my DBS Superleggera today and focused on the whine. And yes, it is present, especially on throttle liftoff or deceleration. It is noticeable but not annoying.

Have you checked the oil level in the diff?

Differentials shouldn't 'whine' whatever the circumstance. It may have been normal back in the 60's or even 70's but not now.

I own a 2019 DB11 Volante and I can hear the whine when cruising on flat terrain with throttle enough to sustain constant speed.
As soon as I lift my foot or press the gas pedal the whine goes away. I can only hear it when driving between 50 an 80 mph (I have not tried cruising much above 80 where I live).
To be honest, for me, it used to be “part of the landscape” until my dad (a true hard core big machines piston head, I mean tractors, trucks, harvesters, etc.) noticed the noise and insisted that was transmission noise. In his book it’s always alarming, he was asking questions about oil age.
It does not bother me, but definitively I’m asking the local performance car service folks when I bring the car for service next year.

Not a DBS/DB11 but I had a DBX 550 earlier this year and it also had a diff whine around 50mph-60mph, quite prominent when off throttle. After various investigations by AM Dealer and an inspection from a visiting AM factory technician the e-diff it was replaced under warranty.

On off throttle diff whine should never happen. It’s symptomatic of pinion pre-load or diff gears not adjusted properly. Saying it’s within acceptable range is Aston not willing to spend the money to fix the problem.
