Hello there, how many of us use our Astons over winter?
How often do you wash them over winter?

I have been out in mind and it now has some road salt on it, not sure if it is best to leave it like this or wash the salt off and then leave it all wet..any opinions?

My opinion? Get the salt off. Now. Get something like a garden sprinkler or a pressure wash wand and get it off the underneath as well (last year i dragged my garden sprinkler along the length of the car several times to rinse the underneath.

Being wet will do little harm (and it'll dry eventually if it's garaged), being wet and salty brings a whole new level of corrosion, as any trip to the seaside will show by looking at anything mildly metallic, esp. ferrous.

I use mine all year, avoid days when the roads are liberally covered in salt. I see no point in just looking at my DB09 TOY in the garage.

Choices; look at it; wash it or drive it?

I prefer driving it.

Mileage and condition will impact on selling price but why buy a modern Aston and worry about depreciation.

This was my plan too to drag a garden sprinkler back and forth under the car. You can buy a wheeled sprinkler off eBay and do similar for about £30.

I wouldn’t put a wet car with hot engine into a cold garage - you’ll just increase the humidity and without a dehumidifier (?) you’ll make things worse.

Definitely drive my DB11 year round. Only in garage when raining all day or ice on the roads.

Daily driver all year round for a number of years and one of the most reliable cars I’d owned. No noticeable deterioration in anything other than usual wheels and frontal area, both of which are easily remedied.

When I first got it I used it for the first year in the winter, but now-a-days she is under a cover so I can't even look at the 9 - but I tend to not drive it in the winter - this year is an exception where it has been on a SORN since last September due to the wider situation but I normally just tax it for 6 months of the year - normally April - September - but those are the most likely roof off months in the UK. (plus i hate washing cars so that is another reason for not driving in winter/rain).

Using my 07 V8V since several winters now for occasional/regular pleasure drives.
On most occasions I pressure wash it afterwards - no ill effects visible.

Have you checked the rear subframe? Seems to be the the part that suffers the most

I am thinking the same thing. I have heard some horror stories about corrosion on the sub frames, so I am thinking of taking my car the HWM for the ACF-50 treatment to protect the underside from corrosion. Has anyone done this?

Yes, checked - no worsening observed...
However, I agree it's a good thing to apply some protection in advance.

Yes, I had this done at collection back in Feb. I’m using Valet Magic in Chertsey for PPF, they will also apply Dynax to the rear subframe - I’ve asked for some before pics, to see how well the ACF50 coped. My subframe had some visible surface rust on it before ACF50 was applied.

Driven my V8V all year round from new, tends to need a good wash top and bottom after every outing during the winter months. Other than avoiding days with ice and snow forecast, never had a problem other than the rear end can get a little more excited if you are too heavy with the right foot. Did consider buying a set of winter wheels/tyres, but not convinced myself of the value yet would be interested on other winter users thoughts?

I bought my car to enjoy and keep as long as I can afford it, so never worry about the depreciation or valuation. Would only be disappointed if I thought I had missed an opportunity to get the most pleasure out of it. Never understand anyone spending so much on a car to drive so little, unless money on object.

I can't comment on winter tyres on an Aston but a few years back, well before I bought my V8V, I put a set of Nokian winter tyres on my wife's Volvo C30 to give her more confidence on her commute. Then one snowy Sunday I had to go out so took her car and I was absolutely amazed at the way it accelerated, steered and stopped as though I was on tarmac and not on snow and ice. I promptly ordered a set for my V70 daily driver.

I've now got V60CC as a daily which has more appropriate tyres than my old V70, so I'll see how it performs before I decide whether to get a set for that as well.

The best answer so far, oilit! clap Very sensible.

Just washing the car during winter use isn´t the solution. Getting the water out of bodywork, suspension etc. afterwards is the real task. Never put it away wet.

Use mine all year round. The spare rims (Sportspack) with Sottozeros go on during the winter. Last winter it had its first wash of the year well into the month of April having not previously seen soapy water since October. The paintwork is fine, the subframe is fine.
Unused cars fester, used cars thrive.

Never, even on the continent when living there or skiing, ever had winter tyres and never had a problem. Of course had to have snow chains on some roads (mandated regardless of tyres). Cars have been a mix of all different drive trains. Will acknowledge that skinny tires do really well. Saying that, the Aston coped admirably.

I find that if the weather is treacherous, then I just don’t take unnecessary risks so either don’t go out to start with or drive to the conditions.

RE winter tires

From a technical point one can certainly argue the necessity if you only do occasional drives on dry roads.

However, one should keep an eye on the legal side and remember that in some countries winter tires are mandatory during certain periods. In some countries in case of an accident during slippery conditions you are considered partially guilty without winter tires.

No legal requirement for winter tyres in the UK.

I drive mine all year round. I used to run winter tyres in winter as there was the odd occasion when I might have to use it in snow/ice. Then last year when I changed from my Michelin PS4S to 8 year old Sottozeros I was quite surprised to find that the Sottozeros offered considerably less grip than the Michelins in cold/damp conditions. This was partly because of the remarkable breadth of ability of the Michelins and the fact that the Sottozeros were at about 3-4mm and well past their best at 8 years old. So I swapped back to the PS4S and they now stay on year round. Until I get some Cup 2s next year that is ...........

Regarding salt/cleaning. Well, I try to avoid salty roads and clean it when it's dirty. Probably tomorrow in fact.
