Terrible news, for those loosing jobs, for tax payers that heavily funded this, for the company who obviously don't have the necessary sales frown

Indeed worrying, for the workers, and the success of DBX sales.....

I have to say the timing of this announcement doesn’t make a lot of sense to me as an outsider. Especially after the recent news regarding Q4 2020 deliveries of DBX, and the bullish rhetoric we have been hearing of late from LS. Surely in the big scheme of things the savings recouped by these cuts is a drop in the ocean compared to other financial issues AM may have? Very sad all round for everyone concerned.

Best Regards

Sad news for the employees and the local economy.

I think the DBX is a heavily flawed product and is on borrowed time. I hope that doesn't apply to all of AM.

Let‘s be realistic. If DBX had been going like gangbusters we would all have known it and L Stroll would not have held back telling the world about it. Now it is all clouded in mystery and with the announced lay-offs at the factory this i certainly not a good sign.

We cannot tell yet how demand is going for the DBX. With the group of 'must have the latest' buyers, and every dealer wanting showroom stock and demonstrators etc., sales figures for new models are always initially distorted.

Perhaps LS has said to TM, we have two factories each running at part capacity. TM needed to do something.

I think some of the 'let goes' are temporary agency workers. Presumably not expected to always be needed.

Pledged Millions - The Welsh government might have put in some cash, but most of their original inducement, was a long-term guarantee of the lease payments for the building. Hopefully they will never be required to pay anything in respect of that.

An Aston Martin spokeswoman said: "Aston Martin moves into a new era, with new investment and a new business plan to position the company for success, and to operate as a self-sustaining business in the near future. "In order to secure the future of its Gaydon and St Athan manufacturing facilities, Aston Martin continues to execute on actions to improve the cost efficiency of the business, in alignment with its transformation plan. "Project Horizon has been launched to revitalise its products and deliver a level of operational excellence, agility and efficiency throughout every aspect of the organisation."

Can anyone explain that in normal English to me ? wink

Position the company - alignment with its transformation - agility and efficiency - to secure the future - execute on actions - you're fired.

You make an interesting counter view Jon, and I would love to believe your optimism is well placed, but less staff at Gaydon where we know sports and GT cars are under performing would make sense. In wales where the saviour of the company is being built though? it does suggest as you say the initial early adopters have been supplied and the base level demand is not at the levels they expected. Don't get me wrong, I want the DBX and therefore AM to be hugely successful.

Yeah very worrying, I cant remember any car company making people redundant when a new car has been released., demand is usually high for a few years.

Yeah the DBX is a good SUV but I just dont see the demand, a full fat RR is a great SUV, also Porsche and half the price.

If your after a very fast sporty SUV from a supercar brand the Lamborghini Urus fits the bill.

I did not realise oilit, that I was portraying optimism.

By indicating thst we don't yet know the accurate sales figures, I was wondering, in view of redundancies, whether it might possbly be a repeat of the new Vantage. Sales of that produced a good set of numbers for the first year, but were masking poor demand because of all the showroom and demonstrator stock which amounted to several hundred cars.

However, we did suspect something was wrong, because we could compare each quarter with the new Vantage's predecessor.
With the DBX, we do not have a comparison, so cannot be sure how things are going yet.

I think at Gaydon, there have already been 500 redundancies last year.

There is only two DBX on the school run at my kids school. One black one dark green.

Probably getting on close to 50 range rovers, maybe more if you include Land Rover Discovery. It is literally a Land Rover car park.

Close second?

Could it be to do with replacing engine requirements with Mercedes units and future EV?

So more bought in stuff and less assembly at the factory which leads to less workforce.

No doubt lower volume sales than target is a major factor for job losses so this is sad to see. I was wondering whether it was partially to do with my above point.

Wife to husband.

"Oh Tarquin, it is awfully embarrasing, that our new Aston Martin DBX has to associate with all those frightfully common Land Rovers.
Do you think we ought to move darling little Jemima-Jane, away from Solihull Comprehensive, to Cheltenham College?"

"Yes, but if we did that, we would have to sell the DBX and buy a Land Rover, just to afford the college fees."

- wink

( To our overseas friends, Solihull is a 'posh' suburb of Birmingham, home of the Land Rover factory. The place is full of employee staff cars. )

You could be onto something with this! hehe

The sensible option for any petrol head is of course the reverse play: Move the offspring out of prep and upgrade ones mode of conveyance!

DBX is nice but sadly even then I wouldn’t be any help to the good folk of St Athan. Snotty old Rapide out : DBSS in!
