Vanquish Coil Pack replacement

Morning All,

First post so be gentle....

I am replacing the coils and spark plugs on my 2003 Vanquish due to a miss fire that's developed. I have just done one bank but noticed there is a bit of oil on some of the coils and spark plugs.

Do you think I need to replace cam cover gaskets while I am in here?

Car is a little old but only done 12,500 miles.

Hi there, maybe. I have coils now so will put them in anyway.

Wasn't sure if there was enough oil on there to cause a miss fire you see, doesn't seem too much but don't want it to get worse. I know someone that had one of these and it developed a miss fire, destroying the cat which duly got ingested by the motor. 12 months later and £28k lighter he got his car back...

You may not need to replace the cover gaskets, but you must replace the plug gaskets since oil into the plug well contributes to premature misfire/coil failure. It’s a big, expensive job replacing coils, so don’t stop now.

Don't know if you are in AMOC but there is a very active forum for Gen 1 Vanquish - very helpful bunch .

Misfire is most often due to oil ingestion into the breather system - See AMOC Newport Pagnell section or speak to David Such, V12Vanquish.com

Thanks all for the replies.

I have ordered the gaskets, while its stripped down I might as well get it right. Apparently if the PCV system is blocked the air filter gets oily, mine is spotless so not sure if you have an opinion?

I also spoke to the Admin at AMOC about joining but its £130 a year just to use a forum (I am not bothered about the events, magazine etc) so seemed a little pricey to me.

Just got the car and it had a miss fire when warm, so put it down to the coils as these tend to get worse as they heat up. Also the plugs didn't look great so replaced them too. The oil weep was minimal and to be honest didn't look severe enough to cause a miss fire but its apart now so might as well do it.

The car has 12,500 miles and apart from the miss fire drove beautifully, although there is no evidence of the clutch or sensors being replaced I am sure this will need doing at some point. Always lusted after an original Vanquish, one of the best looking cars of all time in my opinion and oh my word, that engine!

Yes the place you need to be is the NP Vanquish section on the AMOC Forum. Use the advanced search there and you will find all you need to know. There are seals around the plug pockets that have been known to have been fitted incorrectly in the past which cause the exact symptoms that your pictures show.

Yes, £130 for forum is expensive, but it has saved me loads of ££££, so, for me worth it.

hi all,

Has anyone had the cam covers off a V12 Aston? They look pretty straightforward apart from a REALLY awkward harness bracket that locates on the rear 2 cam cover bolts on the LH bank.

I have the bolts undone but doesn't want to budge. Unbolted the expansion tank to give a bit of wiggle room but nothing more....

Any advice welcome, might even join AMOC.....ggrrrrrrr!

You will make your membership money back on the first job you do yourself. There is also so much information on recent problems that can be car stoppers (and the dealers are no longer any help at all with). The members of the club have solved the problem with a repair in the hundreds not the thousands that the dealers charged when they could get the spares.
