Hi all, having just sold my V10 R8 I'm eyeing up a replacement, I need something with 4'ish seats as I have 2 small kids and having only 2 seats means i just don't use the car... i also need a degree of practicality and comfort as i occasionally need to a 200 mile round trip to my office.

The obviously choice is some sort or 911, I'm interested in a Turbo as its the defacto 911 and i have a desire to own one at some point in my life. Having previously ran a 997 Carrera S and 981 Boxster S i've got an idea of running costs associated with Porsches (I appreciate the Turbo is probably a step up). The R8 was relatively cheap to run, which for me is mainly servicing/road tax, I do only a few miles a year and I'm not worried about MPG (work covers that cost on the commute).

Which brings me to the second gen Vanguish, due to an impending house extension my budget probably doesn't stretch to the 8 speed, so I'd be looking at a 6 speeder. Does anyone care to share their experiences with running costs? i've done a google search and can't find anything on service intervals or costs, i imagine a change of sparkplugs isn't cheap (I got coped for that on the R8!) for example. I'd probably be looking at an approved used car to reduce risk and get a decent warranty for a year, what to the warranty extension options look like? Is it necessary? I'd happily run another R8 out of warranty (based on my experience any), a 911 I'm not so sure, my 997 warranty paid for itself several times over!

I’d class the vanquish as a 2 seater. Have you been to see one?

Much like you I was struggling to find stuff on running costs.
I think it’s mainly ceramic brakes to watch for, servicing will be about £800, maybe less if you supply your own oil.
Servicing is annual, I’ve been quoted £500 by AM Leeds, but I am an SCD member where there is discount.

My r8 ownership included mag ride replacement and clutch upgrades (due to supercharging) so I’m not expecting the vanquish to be worse (fingers crossed!!)

Hi Pete,

Fixed price servicing from Works in Newport Pagnell. You night just qualify for free collection and delivery looking at where you live.

My kids fit in the rear of mine pretty easily, 8 & 10. Short journeys only mind.

Mine has done 14,000 miles and just had a set of tyres.

CCM's need to be checked for cleaning damage. Unlikely to be worn through track days use given the type of car.

I extended my warranty for two years when it was 3 years old. Cost £3,900 payable interest free over 10 months.

Hope this helps.

Nick

FWIW - fixed price servicing is fixed by the factory and applies to all main AM UK dealers, whichever is closest. My friend has not had a good experience with Works at all. Won't go into details here as its not appropriate of course.

Wasn't aware of the SCD discount. Will have to look into that as it seems to pretty much pay for the SCD membership fee. Hmmm scratchchin

i haven't been to see one, I'm not expecting proper rear seats like in an M5 for example, i assumed they would be on par with the 911, there's not really seats but occasionally work for shoving 2 small kids in... I'm not intending on doing the school run that's for sure!

I think it’s around 15%.. so yes man maths can make that work! I’ve just bought the car from them so maybe there was further discount for that also.

Thanks Nick, that's really useful smile service pricing looks on par with the Porsche when you factor in the 20k/2year service intervals.. the R8 is definitely an oddity when it comes to high performance car servicing, i.e. cheap!

I assume the CCMs run at the usual best part of £10k mark that most seem to? to be fair i've never owned a car with CCMs so that's just hearsay on my part. what is "cleaning damage"? chemical related or physical damage?

No disrespect but the R8 is an Audi, may be fast, but its the brand that seems to set the cost usually, not performance, so not in the same service cost as a Porsche/Aston/Ferrari etc... really. To be fair, both Porsche and Aston are not in the same service cost as say Ferrari actually! Thats when things start to get really silly. Oh and crazy exotica hyper-cars like Ford GT's of course are the exception to what I've just said.

Anyway - yeah, CC Discs can be >£12k, but if you just drive on the roads (ie don't track it, which I doubt you would in a Vanquish) then they should last the lifetime of the car without replacement. Pads are much more affordable, but again will last a very long time if driven normally.

Damage can be caused by all sorts of chemical cleaners really. Stay well away from your wheels with anything like that. Just use normal car wash soap and water and you'll be fine.

No need to really have to try hard to clean the wheels anyway, as with CCM's you get almost no brake dust so the wheels always come up lovely with just soap n water anyway.

Good news on the FPS at all dealers. My experience of Works over 10 years has been exemplary. It's like recommending a restaurant, you do it and hope for the best!!

Doing about 5000 per annum you should budget around £1k/yr for annual service plus perhaps £600 for 2 tyres without needing anything major. Bigger services will obviously cost more (sometimes lots more) I found little/no difference in service charges between a good indi and the main dealer I purchased from so stayed with the supplying dealer for the sake of service book continuity. Always dreading brake replacement but as previous poster said, the discs will last a long time if not tracked, but be warned, pads are still pricy and you will chage those at 1/2 disk life. I seem to recall 4-500 per axle (could be a bit out there). I found Aston service costs to be similar and on-par with Ferrari servicing costs based on previous F430 ownership experience.

It's a 2, 3, or 4 seater depending on you, your spouse, your children.

For me, it was a 3-seater. I run the driver's seat all the way back (5'10") until it touches the rear seat cushion, so no one can sit back there, period. My wife (5'8") could run the seat forward enough to allow my 20 YO daughter (5'6") to sit in the back for a short period of time, after which she had to be pried out like a cripple. If my wife had her seat in the normal position for her comfort, maybe a 6 YO could fit in the back.

just as a follow up, who in the AM world are considered "reputable" dealers? if there is such a thing? and do any of them offer a warranty that's actually worth the paper its written on? there's not much in the main dealer network at the moment, though that's not just an AM situation currently.

They'll all offer the 1 year Timeless Warranty on a used car; some say it's not worth much, others have been thankful for it. It's extendable after that period finishes, but like most warranties it then becomes pricey (£2k or thereabouts each year IIRC). Generally the cars are robust and don't experience massive repair bills.

As for dealers, honestly I don't think there's any bad ones anymore - you'll always here a horror story here and there, but the factory keeps a close eye on all of them. In my own experience and that which I've heard, some very good ones are Bristol, Reading, Nottingham, Cambridge and AM Works. The servicing cost should be the same at all of them, so it's just down to how you view them from a customer service perspective.

I think the only realistic non two seat Gaydon sports/GT Aston is a Rapide. They are exceptional value. Re warranties - many on here don’t extend the first three years. They are generally very reliable cars. The only thing I’ve had go wrong on a V12VS in the last four years out of warranty has been some paint coming off a piece of window trim - trim is not covered by the warranty. In the first three years I had head and tail light condensation, and one piece of paint bubbling fixed under the warranty. No recurrence of those issues.

I’ve only ever dealt with HWM for sales, and AM Cheltenham for service. Both excellent.

Also, Aston have recently changed the spark plug change requirement from 7 years or 70,000 miles to just 70,000 miles.

Yet to have anything major go wrong with mine just yet (nudging 20k miles) and typically <£1k pa servicing. So far the running costs have been consistently lower than my Cerbera and less than half those of a Bentley CGT.

I'd reckon as it as a 2-3 seater at best. As another poster has said, nobody fits behind the driver so you're looking at 2x smaller people on the passenger side. Even then, anyone teenage upwards isn't going to appreciate going in the back.

Reminds me of memories of watching "Seven of Nine" on Star Trek Next Gen in my younger years. Such a snug bodysuit, errr, I mean a great actress. smile

thanks all, sorry, my bad when i wrote "dealer" i should of said specialist dealers, if there is such a thing? i mean like Thorney for McLarens, Hartech for Porsches etc

theres a silver car at bespoke20 in manchester i like the look of, clearly these aren't even an AM specialist, would it be nuts to entertain buying a car from this kind of seller?
