Knighthood for Sebastian Vettel
Discussion
Haven't been here for a while but had a browse today.
So Aston launch an F1 team get their first podium in an exciting race and no discussion or thread ?
I guess it is not as interesting as a locking wheel nut problem on a V8 Vantage (before I am crucified I have no idea if they have locking wheel nuts) but I do find that a bit surprising.
Has Stroll got the importance of F1 all wrong ?

As you said though, no new thread. It’s nice to see AM back on the grid, and well done to Vettel for yesterday’s result and podium. It could be argued that other drivers circumstances and misfortune helped him on the day, but he’s a class act, and he still had to finish the job. With regards to the marketing effects of the F1 team, as much as I want AM to succeed, whatever happens on the track won’t influence any purchasing decisions I make, and I would imagine that many on here would probably feel that way. No doubt Strolls F1 strategy is to attract buyers from other markets as has so often been mentioned. Moers did say the AM configurator was overloaded after one of the recent GPs, (Monaco I think?) so maybe it will help the overall sales in the longer term. Can’t do them any harm though with results like yesterday that’s for sure!
Best Regards
Minglar

Not so, Andrew.
When we first started an Aston Martin racing topic, it was whisked away to the F1 forum.
Needless to say, few AM PHers go there, so within 48 hours it was dead.
We now use this topic, so you are welcome to join the debate.

A strange title, but now you know why.
PS.
You do seem to be keen on knighthoods.

That knighthood for Andy Palmer that nobody wanted to support must be getting closer !
He might have received an Italian honour though - for services to a private equity fund.
After he steered the Company to its 2019/2020 cash flow crisis, the British award was called P45.

And as if by magic, this thread gets whoosed away too - even though it clearly had a very Aston Martin owners bias.
Hey ho…. Anyway the F1 connection is far less relevant than WEC series was in terms of road cars for me.
Sure be nice to see Aston win, but a) thats very unlikely and b) its even less likely to have the presumed intent to make me want to buy another new Aston - what with the direction the new company is heading anyway….

I would be interested to see what percentage of sales Mercedes attribute to their F1 success over recent years. I think maybe Aston getting a higher hit rate on their configurator had more to do with the Vantage safety car than Messer's Vettel and Stroll in a green iteration of last years pink car.
As Minglar stated above, a successful F1 race/season wouldn't make me go out an buy an Aston.

It is very clear that in the UK, the enormous sales increase for Mercedes-Benz has been due to the popularity of PCP, not Formula One.
For those motorists who had been used to buying Ford Escorts or Vauxhall Astras on Hire Purchase, with PCP they could suddenly have a 'premium' image Mercedes- Benz for the same monthly cost. What did the neighbours think about that, except the neighbours would soon do exactly the same. Result, in just a few years, M-B UK sales literally doubled.
PCP was of particular benefit to the 'up market' brands, except with so many of their products now on the road, their previous 'premium' images have been diluted towards very common place. No longer special.

It is odd to me that the Aston F1 team cannot be discussed on the Aston forum as it might make the forum a bit livelier again !
Maybe I’m a simpleton but I really enjoyed Seb getting his podium! Far less tacky than winging it on an expensive tie up with an energy drink or apartment block in Dubai! Dammed if you do and all that.
I will say I enjoyed it more so since Hamilton and Verstappen came out net flat on the day so it wasn’t really at the expense of anyone in the fight for the title, and no swing one way or the other in that fight. That’s the beauty of racing he still had to take it to the finish and be in contention. I’m sure any other team out there would have been utterly delighted! A well deserved win!
Does it really matter that it’s the current iteration of a racing team that goes way back when? I used to really love Jordan! If anything it is the perfect back story for Aston Martin isn’t it.
The idea of a (rather lovely) green racing point may not appeal to the old cynics but where perhaps James Bond in a DB5 was the appeal to the youth of old, he could arguably be seen as a less relevant these days. Especially since he now appears to take himself far too seriously all the time! Former Racing point car, Lawrence Stroll and Moers are here, now. Let’s celebrate it.
And if not us? Well my non-cynical 5yr olds eyes lit up when he could see the wings on the screen ‘’Wait a minute! Aston Martin?!’ he exclaimed, in the F1 proper, in green, leading the race for a few laps and then finishing second. He didn’t even mention the funny looking nose! His favourite current Aston? The DBX!
Perhaps there is method in the madness after all. I say give it a few years before calling it all folly.
In summary it feels a touch premature to call for a knighthood. Crikey if Lance hadn’t been unlucky it could have been a 1,2 podium! That’s when we call to have them both knighted, right?
I just really want the green belt and trouser two piece to rock at the festival of speed! Now that’s a look! Stroll knows his onions! Exact copy available on wish, right now for £15. Imitation as they say is the sincerest form of flattery!

Not going to reopen that debate (title of this thread was tongue in cheek) but as you know I have a particular view on the job AP did which clearly is not shared on here.

I expect you are referring to AP's initial tenure. Great enthusiasm, motivated the employees and introduced some exciting models.
It was in the year preceding the IPO, where he was (with our hindsight) clearly concentrating on raising investor expectations. So many future new model announcements (some abandoned, others yet to appear), flats, submarines, aircraft, over production, a single profitable year reported. It all worked though. Company IPO value £4.3 billion (almost made the FTSE 100 Index), main investor sold at the peak, but from then on reality set in and the Company value fell 90%. Some investors, including many AML mployees lost a great deal of money.
Almost akin to two different men.
I too follow F1 (highlights only) and thought Vettel lost his mojo some years ago but his last two races for AM proved he still has it. I also agree that AM is for all intents and purposes Racing Point/Force India, but I also remember Mercedes F1 buying Brawn GP formerly Honda F1. They have to start somewhere.
