There is currently a DB9 GT 2016 Black 140,000 miles on Autotrader for £60,000.
This car was previously shown on a Bamford Rose classified chat with low mileage, can’t remember the price but think it was late 70’s.
On 10th June this very same car was on Autotrader at £81,999 with 13,500 miles.
This week on Monday 4th July the price had jumped up to £88,786 with 14,000 miles.
I’m not mistaken as I have screenshots of the ad, I can provide them if necessary.
So now the car is showing 140,000 miles for £60,000.
Call me a cynic, but 136,000 miles in a couple of days.
I did email the seller when it jumped up to £88,786. His email response showed his full address etc, with part of his address being Consultant Stroke/Neurovascular Medicine, Royal Berkshire Hospital, Reading, U.K.
His reply and tone did not appear to come from someone so highly qualified.
This has certainly put me off sourcing a car from a private seller.
I welcome any thoughts or comments

The first number plate should give a clue to his profession. MOT check says 11,498 miles at 13/3/2021

My guess is an innocent typo 140,000 miles instead of 14,000 miles.

I mistyped myself when typing the above sentence. smile

I wouldn’t buy an Aston ‘blind’ from a private seller on AT. Either go to a respected dealer, or look through the owners club, PH or FB group or similar. You’re more likely to get an honest car that way, or at least a referral to one.

From what I recall you were looking at V8V and N430 V8's last week.

There is a big difference in the way a V8V and a V12 DB9 drive and the gearbox options are very different indeed. I suggest that you might want to go try each of the various models that you may be interested in to decide exactly which is the right one to meet your needs, then look for a good example of that specific type.

If you buy the wrong model for you, you may well end up just as disappointed as an owner as you would have if you had bought a less than ideal example.

Are you suggesting he needs to investigate taking up smoking a pipe and wearing carpet slippers if he decides on a DB9, Adam? biggrin

Agreed. I’m so undecided on what I want so doing as much research as I can. My preferences change day by day so yes, I need to make sure I’m 100% happy with whatever I decide. I’ve gone from drooling over Aston’s to now being in a position to bite the bullet. The search goes on.

Well, it’s now been changed from 140,000 miles to 14,000 miles and price changed from £60,000 to £84,000.

Sound advice, thank you.

Nothing wrong buying from a private seller, if you know what to look for.
If not take someone with you that has one or arrange an inspection, prior to buying.

Agreed; the right car from the right owner at the right price. If all three criteria are met, what's the problem, unless a dealer-warranty is a must and even then some dealer warranties aren't really worth the paper they're written on. An AM-franchised seller doesn't necessarily guarantee the best car. IMHO.

It all rather depends on how much your spending and how risk averse you are.

The more you spend, the more it means the car you are looking at will be newer and therefore a main dealer makes more sense in terms of thats where the stock is and anyone selling privately more likely has a dodgy agenda.

With older cars the opposite is true as people are very aware of dealer margins and keen to get good value deal either buying or Selling.

Then you have the gung ho buyer vs the cautious buyer.

You simply cannot just roll it all into a single statement, but generally speaking the older and less valuable a car is, the more private sales make sense vs main dealer sales, with indi sales slipping into the middle ground
