Just clocked the front cover of car magazine in WH Smith. Along with the Valhalla there is what appears to be a new Vantage and New Rapide, both electric.

I can’t see these online anywhere, or I’m not looking hard enough. Does anyone have a link please?

Cheers

So was this what was spotted recently with cladding and a strange/unfamiliar sound? AMG hybrid in a Vantage?

I purchased the issue just now.
The take away is what we've heard thus far. There won't be a new in-house ICE ever again, AMG V8s will be used until the new fully EV Vantage is ready and order books open in '25 at the earliest. An EV Rapide follows as well as another smaller SUV, again EV. All new products will use a proprietary AM infotainment suite, no more MB hand me downs.

This raises the question as to what AM's plans are for the Vanquish name?

I was all up for the Rapide-E concept - after-all it would sit in the same space as a Tesla Model S….

Hope its looks decent with sensible range !

A simple pop up screen with airplay and a bit of dab would suffice for me.

Being as I haven’t heard a peep of these elsewhere I presumed they must be photoshops by the magazine - but that’s not really like Car magazine to do. What’s going on? Legit or just some pretty made up pictures?

They're just some magazine renders - no more real than cars found in computer games, but it's easy to confuse and upset the internet.

If there was to be another Rapide, it would be by way of the DBX platform, which isn't really news, as that had always been the plan - I suspected some sort of estate / shooting brake similar to a Taycan Cross Turismo might appear once the DBX Coupe and 2 hybrids are launched.

As for EV Vantage's, again - I thought it had already been made clear that the Vantage in its next guise i.e. not a face lifted version of the current one which everyone dislikes, would be electric, because by 2025 (when I'd imagine it maybe launched) - why on Earth would you launch an all new car that's expected to have a near 10 year life cycle, with an engine you cannot sell to the public from year 5.

Yes, AML have already outlined the plan for DB11 and Vantage replacements being all electric. The magazine have just taken that further and created computer pictures.

The Valhalla showed us how to extend 5 years UK sale period to 10 years. Electric only power for 9 miles !

Perhaps we should study the current Mercedes-Benz electric cars, to see what power and claimed summer range will be in the AML electric cars. All that I know, is that some of them look enormous, have the aerodynamics of a garden shed and probably require a ladder to get in and out. wink

I’d be up for one of those too (kids too big for 3/4 up in Vanquish) but you can keep the DAB.

AM doing their own infotainment (assuming they don’t really mean they’re getting a third party specialist to do it) is, erm, a less than obvious route given the complexity and need for the UX to be spot on. And without the volumes to spread the cost over either. I understand the criticism around 3rd party engines, but there really doesn’t seem to be a need to bring infotainment in house…

You nailed it when you mentioned the UX. Everyone rightfully complained when the infotainment was blatently from a MB, which you could buy for 20% of the cost of your new AM. To stand out in the luxury market you need to be unique, and just lifting and dropping such a key part of the interior experience directly from a mainstream brand that there are millions of, was really taking the edge of the AM interiors. Its not just the actual UX that goes with the infotainment package, its the screens and controller. That mousepad thing in the new AM's was so blatently MB, it slapped you around the face when you got in the car.

AMi III was a really cracking system, and had Apple carplay and Andriod auto way before most of the mainstream manufactures had, which just goes to show what you can do if you bespoke your own.

I’m with you on this, the visuals and touch points really matter if it’s an OEM solution.. The Mercedes systems are, I’m sure, very good (albeit they’ll keep the latest stuff for themselves instead of supplying a third party) but when it’s incorporated in a way that is so obvious and reminds your client base of being driven to the airport it’s going to turn some people off.

It really can’t be that hard to find a specialist that can provide the modules with the UI re-skinned and bespoke controllers (guess they’re CAN bus or similar?)…?

It’s no longer a shock that by 2025 Vantage and the rest of the range will be EV, but hearing (And seeing) it again is just another reminder of how sad things are in the motoring world, stepping into a two seater performance car and firing up the battery - what a throughly depressing thought.

Yes indeed.

The sound of all Aston Martins has always been one of the important features for buyers and owners.

The last time when government told motorists what to do, was when we were all encouraged to buy diesel cars.
They did not convince me though, simply because I did not like seeing at the time, black smoke being emitted by buses, lorries and vans.

If the change to electric is good for the health of people and the planet, then fine.
However, what effect do you see on sports and performance car manufacturers, when the only sound their cars make is tyre noise ?

I don't know.

As stated elsewhere, to me, EV will just be a fad; some years just to recoup the investments made in the whole thing.

Then after that, like magic, someone will come up with a bio lab-made fuel that will work fine and well with petrol engines.

We had the petrol era that no alternatives were possible to avoid upsetting the oil countries (and everything that happened in the backstage of international politics, various wars included). Now we will have the electric era that will be shorter but needs to be there to justify all the investment made so far and then we will move on to finally the real oil alternative.

This is my feeling at least. I might be dead before being proven right or working though.

My V12 is in for a service and MOT atm. I was given a Mercedes A35 for a courtesy car. It's quick. Has a turbo charged 4 pot. Sounds like it's farting and suffer turbo lag. It got me thinking. The current trend of reducing the number of cylinders, I would probably rather enjoy the peace of an electric motor than a turbo charged 4 pot.

Was that a main dealer? If so why wouldn't they be lending their customers a same brand vehicle to at least try and get people to upgrade ? My local dealer used to give me an Audi - never really understood it.
