Yokohama Tyres …..what a difference!

Bought a set of 4 Yokohama Advan Sports from Black Circles for Black Friday price of £660 fitted to replace my old Bridgestones and it’s a completely different car! It feels much more compliant, and sure footed. Ride is more comfortable and less rattles so best 600 quid ever spent. Oh should say it’s a 2012 Vantage S, hence the choice.

Interested in what you meant by “hence the choice” ? I’ll be wanting to do my tyres before long and had assumed PS4 was the popular choice from what I recall reading on previous threads, but maybe there are other options ? For a 2009 4.7 V8V

The sizes are slightly different on the S compared to the standard Vantage, so hence had trouble finding suitable alternatives.

Michelin is a premium brand, hence they will cost you a couple of hundred pounds more than Yoko's which are a mid range brand. You pays yer money and makes your choice.... Its hard to draw any real conclusions of the performance of an old worn tyre against a new one really. There are plenty of review sites out there which show which particular tyres perform well in objective tests, and which dont.

This is a reasonable guide to which brands fall into which price/quality category.

Always saw Yokohama as a premium brand myself. Interestingly when I was looking around the Michelins came out about the same price as the Yokohama's but the sizes did quite fit the S, so hence went for the Yokos. My Elise has the Yokos so have always been impressed performance wise.

Mitchelin PS4S do seem cheap compared to Pirelli, which is why they are such a good choice tbh. Get great performance reviews, and whist I don't have quite the same level of hype about them as some people have, I certainly have not been disappointed with them in any way. Every bit as good as the Pirelli PZeros I had fitted before (non Corsa), and over £100 less at my last change just over a year ago now.

To be fair to the Yokos I think they are more premium than some of the others in that group. In the real world there is much more of a sliding scale between manufacturers of course.

Looking at this review site they seem to perform very closely indeed to the PS4S in most respects, just a couple of % behind in each category, except treadwear.

I’ve never had a problem with yoko’s. They tended to wear fast but other than that they weren’t bad.

I wouldn’t choose them over ps4s’s but it’s all subjective

I ran both Nexen and Hankook on the Vantage, both were really good especially when pressing on.

Ive been running the Yokos for a couple of years now on my Roadster in "S" sizes. I couldn't get the Michelins at the time and have good experience of the Yoko on other cars. Really pleased with them overall. It will be interesting to see how long they last.

Gosh.. haven’t heard Yokohama mentioned in such a positive fashion since the A008’s of the late 80’s. Maybe time for another look!

They were/are one of the most popular fitments on Lotus for the last 20 years. I used to use A048 on track and A039 on road and go through 3-4 sets a year on a good year

I don't see Yokohama as being inferior than Michelin.

Having fitted PS4S to my Vantage earlier this year, I was able to get within £50 of the price quoted by the OP for his Yoko's.

I had Yokohama fitted to my Replica Cobra some years ago and found them to be excellent.

Big thumbs-up here too for Yokohama's. Got them on the DB9 and they are great. PS4's are undoubtedly great too but worth the extra? I don't think so, I feel owners simply feel the most expensive must be the best, and I disagree.

See the test results I posted above... The biggest difference seems to be treadwear, and I guess thats where the big budgets of the likes of Mitchelin come into play, managing to make a tyre that performs as well as a softer tyre, yet has an extended life too.

I suspect the additional wear from the PS4S may actually make them cheaper over the lifetime.

Does anyone know if the Michelins are finally available now in larger V8 "S" sizes in the UK market ? at the time I needed a set a couple of years ago they were not and Michelin did not recommend fitting different models of tyre front to rear.
