ECU Key Programing
Discussion
You have two options.
First, buy a spare crystal key with innards and have the dealer reprogram it to match your car. From memory there is a set of codes that come with the innards that the dealer requires to do the reprogramming. Then you have three keys (two crystal and one valet).
Second, buy a spare crystal key with or without (cheaper without) innards, and move the innards from your courtesy key into the new crystal key. All you need to do this is a very small screwdriver - an optician’s set. Then you have two keys both of which are crystal.
Option 1 is expensive. I went for option 2, bought another one of those AM leather covers for it, and resolved never to let a valet park my car.
The inside of the key has two components: a printed circuit board which is controlled by the buttons on the fob and which unlocks the car, and a small black hockey puck thing that is the transponder that talks to the ignition and lets the key start the car. A new PCB can be programmed to control the locks (I forget how, now) but it’s the transponder that requires codes and AM dealer intervention.
