fuel computer remaining range

I find that the average mpg on my '07 V8V is exceptionally accurate (usually within 0.5mpg) but the remaining range calculation is horribly pessimistic. When I fill up, it tells me I have about 325 miles range, but the fuel light is usually on at around 200 miles and the remaining range has dropped to zero quite soon afterwards. I don't want to run out, so I tend to fill it up soon after the light comes on, but I've never managed to get more than 55 litres in (suggesting there was still about 20 litres left in the tank)

I have a friend who each time he visits, always announces the mpg of his journey.
He is a millionaire, so probably only his psychiatrist understands this obsession with fuel consumption.
Most of us are very fortunate, to be able to enjoy our Aston Martins and just fill them up without needing to think too much.
Does the expected mileage distance change, if you drive either slowly or quickly? Could that be a possible reason for the difference ?
I did not know that the warning light comes on very early, but better like that.

Spend money carefully. A commendable thought and I always admire people with aspiration and self made success.
In this particular instance though, a perfectly decent chap, but with circumstances rather more akin to being a child of Bernie Ecclestone.

It is hilariously all over the place the range.
I fill mine up and it states about 450 miles until I reach the end of the road when it drops to 350. Then a mile later it’s at 280
If I drive like the most daisy of Miss Daisy’s it’ll sort of stay put but tap the loud peddle and I loose 150 miles of range with immediate effect.
I went out yesterday and was on the fuel light when I left and apparently had 180 miles of range ? LoL, got to the end of the road and it was 60. Got to the petrol station and it said 120 again.

When you fill up the computer resets. It will calculate the remaining range basis an average of x number of miles driven prior to the fill-up.Quick update on this issue
My son and I had an enjoyable run around North Wales yesterday. Started with a full tank and 250 miles later, we got the fuel light. We got home 10 miles later and filled it up with the needle very close to empty and the remaining range at 30 miles.
However, it still only took 52 litres, suggesting there was around 25 litres still in the tank, so I reckon the gauge (and consequentially, the remaining range calculation), is a long way out.

So like you I think I have a really pessimistic gauge in mind. It’s a 2017 V8v Roadster and the most I have ever gotten in was 62l after doing nearly 20 miles after the low fuel light. So by my reckoning that left 18l in the tank, good for 72 miles at least. Yet it reckoned 30… trouble is I’m not brave enough to find out how low I can go!

I just ignore the range and KNOW I've got another 3 gallons.

Cruising on the motorway it's another 80 miles
The average mpg readout is pretty accurate though.

My guess is that one is using the fuel metered and the mileage recorded to calculate what you've used (which will be very accurate); the other is using the sender in the tank (which is a plastic float on a stick) to try to guestimate how many miles you have left.Given that it's so accurate, I can't see why the remaining range calculation is so far out.
