There is now a fashion for some racing cars to be painted in multi-colours.

Car manufacturers use a patterned appearance on their development cars when testing on public roads. They purposely want to hide the bodywork details and/or make.
Multi-colouring has a similar effect.
When watching a British Touring Car Championship event on television, it is now very difficult to distinguish the make of any of the cars during a race.

When racing is sometimes said to be for marketing purposes, why do the teams go to great length to create confusion about the make of their car?

Fashion, and because computer-cut vinyl makes it easy. If you're a fan I suppose you can tell them apart.

I liked the old F1 days when each country, or team, had its own colour. Britain - BRG (of course!), France - blue, Germany - silver, Italy - red. Then it went to Lotus - black, Ferrari - red, Williams - white etc. Now as you say it's a jumble, and changes every year as well. I have no idea what the pink ones are.
