I was swapping notes with the first owner of my 2007 DB9. He said that while the car was at Newport Pagnell he'd got a quote to 'respray and renew' it.

I thought - crumbs, with 'Aston tax' that could be as much as £10K.

Not even close. rofl

The respray was £25K and the 'renew' (ie bring up to date batteries, tyres, media system, window motors etc) - well, he didn't bother finding out!

Has anyone here stumped up for the full bifta?

Ha that's funny cos I'm not sure I would even want Aston to do my paintwork . They aren't exactly renowned for the quality of their paint when it leaves the factory.
Half an hour in a new car AM dealership and I guarantee you will be able to find a paint blemish on one of their showroom.cars.
I love Aston and they create some beautiful products but their in house painting hasn't traditionally been their strongest attribute.

Your right there.
My 4 year old V12SRM has rust coming through on door panals. Its not covered under warranty, but as a gesture of goodwill they will pay 70%. Thats nice of them!
I pointed out that the fleet of BMW 3 series we run have a 10 year paint warranty, and that my daughters Twingo also has 10 years. They did not comment.
Fair to say, I cancelled the DBS order

Nutty money.

I’ve seen some sprays of that money that haven’t even looked that great.

Some paint shops literally make up the prices as they go. Increasingly so it seems.

There was some chat on here recently about Mr JWW and his DBS which is in the process of being resprayed at AM Works. There are some videos of it on his YouTube channel, although as far as I know there is no mention of any of the costs involved. There was some speculation on here that he may be getting a freebie…….who knows. I found it interesting to see how much work goes in to it, especially when the car was being dismantled in preparation for paint.

Best Regards

He didn't ask the factory to do the paint - it was Works .
Not sure how good their paint is but £25k is having a laugh ....

Don't feel to bad about that.
At least they offered you a gesture.

Mercedes-Benz do even better than 10 years. They have a wonderful 30 year breakdown and corrosion warranty.
Think they grandly call it Mobilo.

All very good, until you point out rusty wheel arches.
"Oh sorry, that type of rust is not covered by our warranty."

You seem to have been treated very well by Aston Martin, in comparison with that 'raise your hopes' marketing nonsense.

You should have stuck to your guns a little more firmly. AM's have a 10 year anti paint perforation warrenty. Recently however warrenty claims have become somewhat hit and miss with their approval. I would suggest your dealer didnt make a very good case on your behalf with them. Rust coming through is very clearly perforation and should have been fixed. I know of lots of AM's that have had the dreaded aluminium "rust" fixed under warrenty even beyond 10 yrs.

It may be that they charge that much for any Aston - in which case you'd be happy to spend that much on, say, a DB6, as it could add more than that to the value. But on an early DB9, nope.

In a different arena, my boat hatches are held up by a 4" piece of plastic. One of them snapped so I asked the factory if they could send me a replacement. A tenner should have been more than enough, but no - the factory want £126 because 'We don't sell them separately, you have to buy the hatch kit....' No sale!

Why would an early DB9 be charged at a lower rate - its the same mechanics, the same workshop with the same rent and rates to pay. Just because the car has depreciated in market value doesnt mean the running costs are any different. Indeed thats the whole point - one of the reasons cars like this depreciate is the high running costs which means many people arn't interested.

I find the talk of "aston tax" somewhat misplaced too - you guys should try looking at parts for a Ferrari or similar if you want to see really high costs. In my opinion AM parts arnt all that much more expensive than a BMW or a Merc, which considering that an AM compete in a much higher category makes them relatively decent value.

It's not rust though, it piss poor paint preparation causing paint bubbling and potentially aluminium oxidisation. The AM corrosion warranty specifically talks about rust, which only affects iron / steel. So, they always have a get out. Would be interesting to see the warranty terms on the new model Vantage/ DB11/DBSS, to see if it changed.

Note, I'm not defending AM I had the discussions with the dealer and the factory a few years ago

No it isn't - check your owners manual (section B.3) - the pain anti perforation corrosion protection warranty never mentions the word "rust" at all. It simply says "shoudl any part of the bodywork of the Aston Martin vehicle be perforated, the panel(s) affected by the perforation will be repaired or replaced".

It does however say that perforation means a hole penetrating through the body panel - but I have never known any manufacturer actually stick to that wording (they all use that definition). Paint bubbling up is more than enough proof of corrosion.

I was quoted £7k for front wings, bonnet, and roof respray of my db9 by Aston Workshop. Seemed about right to me? £25k for the whole car does feel a bit steep.

I don’t recall the exact split but I paid £9500 for my V12 Vantage refresh which consisted of;

Both bumpers
Bonnet
Wings front and rear
Doors
Door mirrors
Sills

Relaquer of carbon splitter

And was a proper removal of parts strip down, and repaint.

Car then machine polished

Ppf to bumpers, wings, sills, bonnet, Carbon, mirrors and doors and leading edge of roof and a pillars. The remainder of the roof and boot and upper rear wings was ceramic coated.

At the time I though that was a huge amount to get into but car is now perfect.

Was completed at Bicester Heritage and have no doubts about quality of finish.

Bamford Rose did a refresh of mine last year. Interior kickplates and door handles, door handle bubbling, powder coating all external grilles, and repainting the windscreen wipers.

Pricing was very reasonable.

I bet the ppf was a big part of that price.

I’m lucky in that my friend paints cars for concourse. Some of these prices are sobering and make me feel lucky for having a mate that does stuff for me for peanuts.

Did my mates gt3, everything bar the spoiler and the roof. Inc ppf, new centre caps, new splitter, wheel refurb and a few trims. Ceramic coat to finish for 6k.

It’s better than new. The ppf cost as much as all the other work put together !
