So yesterday, I almost ran out of petrol, V8 Vantage, I got to the garage with 6 miles to go, and while waiting for the person in front to move off the pump, the Emission System Service warning popped up. Now based on the fact that there was not a lot of fuel left, I can understand why its a bit upset with me. I filled it up and then drove the rest of the way home, car seemed fine.

So I have got myself a OBD 2 reader, and there is just one code, P0130, O2 Sensor Circuit Malfunction. It appears that this reads the exhaust gases etc, and running so low on fuel can cause it to throw a wobbly.

So my thoughts are to clear the code, take the car out for a spin. I suppose if the issue is still there, the fault will just re appear, but I have never been in this territory, and certainly don't want to make things worse.

Has anyone else had the error?

What are peoples thoughts?

Thanks for reading folks, appreciated.

Kev

Not my model car and I have never dealt with that specific fault code.

But, for what it's worth, I've certainly had codes that won't go away, even after the repair/fix is made, unless the code is specifically cleared from the system i.e. just curing the fault doesn't make the error message disappear.

I got the same warning after turning the engine (V12) on, revving it a couple of times - demo to a friend you see - then turning it off. I rang the dealer who said switch the ignition on and off six times. So I did that, but to no avail. Anyway, the next day the warning had gone and hasn't been back. So I think it's triggered by overfuelling or summink.

Thank you both for the reply, I just rang my AM dealer, and spoke to the Technician, who advised it was okay to clear the code. It may very well come back, he said, and if it does, they will take a look.

Its due in a few weeks time, as I am getting the clutch replaced, as its 80% worn, and so if it re appears they will have a look, but I really think it was upset with the fuel status. But we won't make that mistake again!!

All I can say is, what did we do before Amazon, ordered the reader yesterday, paid 4.99 for it to be delivered today, tool sorted out the fault code, brilliant.

I still remember the days of 28 days for delivery, once your cheque has cleared!!!!

So, I will give the car a good run tomorrow and see how it gets on, but for now, the fault has gone.

Thanks

Kev

IIRC there's no such thing as an Emissions System Service anyway! The faults that bug me are the ones that wipe out the digital speedo section - you can't get rid of them and in normal driving the needle on the analogue speedo is invariably dangling near the bottom where it's hard to read.

Doesn't pressing "Read" get rid of it? Or is fault serious enough it doesn't remove the message?

Pressing read I just moved it off the display but when you start again it’s still there

From what I have read the Emissions system service check message is a whole category of possible faults which the code reader can tell you

One post I read, a chap replaced his rear bumper and that caused the same error on the dash

He read the code and it was because the wiring loom was or had been disconnected

The emissions system service warning went away of its own accord, I think, and hasn't come back. As for fault codes, nobody has ever been able to find any in my car (well to be fair, Stratton couldn't find a fault if it came in to Reception dressed as Chewbacca and said 'Hey, I'll have a Babycham', but the car also went to Phoenix AM and there were no codes there either). But the message that stuck was for a faulty tail light - every time I put the lights on it lit up and couldn't be removed unless you turned the ignition off - not really an option when underway!

Well took the car out today after washing the wheels, picked up some more fuel, I am beginning to think I need to move in to the Shell garage, and the code has gone , all good, and is still off.

I am convinced that the low fuel level caused the error.

So I will never let it get below 1/4 tank again

I don't like it when it goes below 1/4 either; I start to get range anxiety!

Plus if you keep topping it up, you never pay £100+ like those other mugs wobble

Well today it was 2.10 a litre
The irony of waiting 4 years to get an Aston and when I do the petrol price goes off the scale!

I remember moaning when it was 1.70!

But when you come out the garage after paying and walk to the pump and see the car waiting , the cost just goes out the window , cause it’s just a work of art sat there waiting

In my experience a different brand of fuel will often throw an 'emissions' code. Then the car self adjusts to the new fuel and the code, once cleared, doesn't come back - until the next fuel fill, maybe. Crappy fuel in France is often a cause; less so in the UK.

I posted some short videos on Facebook recently showing people how to fix a recalcitrant laptop. Apparently I sound like James May! The fact I fixed it with an axe and a circular saw may have helped. Frankly the laptop had been asking for some precision violence for some time.

The most likely problem is an o2 sensor nearing the end if it’s life. I had this on my car (I think everyone does at some point) and although I cleared the error many times using a DIY tool it kept coming back eventually. AM should be able to diagnose this easily and it is a simple job to change the sensor. It is important to get the fault properly checked in case it is something else other than the obvious culprit.

At least if you only put a bit in it registers! 996 turbo didn’t….if you were near empty and put £30 in it didn’t register on thegauge at all, still showed as empty!!…. Imagine the conversation with yourself after noticing that the first time and not knowing… (1) swindlers, the pump put no fuel in! (2) But hang on, that’s never happened before, and never heard of it happening to anyone else, (3) so did I really just put petrol in or did I imagine it, am I going senile? …. Then check Pistonheads and find out the truth!!!

That actually happened to me in the XK, its last splash on the way to p/ex it for the DB9. The fuel gauge and range had always behaved perfectly before, but this time after I paid for the petrol and got back in, nothing changed. Half a mile down the road it still hadn't changed so I concluded the petrol pump has failed and I'd paid £10 for thin air. So I went back to the garage, put another £10 and drove off, happy that I'd got my £10 of petrol after all. But a minute later it suddenly recovered and showed both amounts. Arse!

I returned to the garage on the way back to pay the second £10. But as the XK had been sold I wonder if they'd have caught me?

My pennies worth, o2 sensors are not a perfect animal. They can throw false signals and i find that idling or rolling slowly up a driveway will set mine off. There is probably absolutely nothing that a brisk drive wont fix. eg mine went off ie engine emissions light a few months ago I cleared it, had the local indy check it over as I was getting an oil change he said all seems fine. I drove 2500klm to a race in Bathurst and not an issue. I had ferraris and maseratis that did the same thing occasionally. I just reset went for a spirited drive and they did not come back .

I've had this 3 times on the Vanquish, every time has been after filling up. It does clear after a few drive cycles though.
