AM V12S - MPG/Mileage

Hi All,

Fresh from selling my Porsche GT4, I am simply in love with my V12s, it is difficult not to drive it all the time…..

Anyway, having bought it with 9.5k miles back in March, I have just hit 11.5k. My friend with a new 911 is whining on about protecting his ‘investment’ by minimising his mileage - Not an approach that makes much sense to me. It cannot be denied that mileage does affect value, but these cars are there to be USED.

I have just taken it on a trip to Wales, 450 miles overall, MPG was 21 which I feel is broadly superb.

I greatly hope that we have the opportunity to experience these cars for as long as we can!

You are a long time dead. Drive it and enjoy it, don't save it for the next guy - that's a nonsense.

Don't think I've ever managed 21mpg in mine, more like 12mpg, so you are clearly not doing something right there tho!

Yes, I have hit an mpg high, I will endeavour to dramatically reduce it!!

Had to take mine from Essex to Oxfordshire and back recently - got the average mpg up to 20.6!

It's so good to have the car performing now as it should have done, after all that nonsense with 'misfires'. Together with the wireless loud button I can really enjoy it now and not worry about accelerating (even though the sports suspension is awful on real roads).

Make the most of driving and enjoying it as much as you can, we are likely the last generation that will be driving V8 and V12 ICE cars.

Ive always though of myself as a driving enthusiast, and consider ive had a good year if Ive enjoyed driving plenty of pleasure miles in my cars and bikes. You usually lose loads in depreciation anyway. The longer you keep it and more miles you drive the cheaper it will work out per mile

What’s the drama/process in getting the remote loud button fitted, would you say it’s all a positive modification?

Best mod ever from CC Charger.
Less than a minute to fit (simple plug into fuse box) and loud/quiet(er) at the press of a button on the supplied fob.

For me it was a positive modification because the louder exhaust sound goes with the hard suspension and road noise of the Sport pack my car unfortunately has. And so the car has moved from being a failed grand tourer to a very posh TVR Griffith, if you know what I mean, with noise and ride better matched. It's a simple thing you can fit in minutes and remove if you ever want to.

If you happen to have circumstances, where you might leave home early and want to be as quiet as possible, there is a wired 3 position switch available.
Always open.
Factory setting.
Always closed.

The remote version provides,
Always open.
Factory setting.

I have a Vanquish II Volante (with a loud button which I fitted myself) I regularly get 30+ mpg when on the motorway at about 80 mph drops to around 20 around town or unless pushing hard... I love it. Recently heard them referred to as a "Brute in a suit" :-) very appropriate

I’m hoping to pass my ice cars onto the next generation at an appropriate time - whether or not they will be interested in them is another question

My V12S averaged never better than 19 not that I tended to look at the consumption too much.My GT8 does around 18 and my R8 with a V10 around 20 so in the scheme of other costs petrol for all of them has always been fairly reasonable given the combined annual mileages I now do.
The V12 had the loud ( or louder ) switch fitted along with Quicksilver secondary cat replacement pipes fitted from new.
When I commuted daily in it our closest neighbours ( whom I had to drive past ) at 6am every morning always used to say they never needed an alarm clock -and that was in so called quiet mode - it wasn't said as a complaint either.

Marek Reichmann uses that expression, but I think it was also used in the Newport Pagnell era.
Some of the models then were extremely powerful. Have never driven one, but I do wonder how the handling would compare to present day Aston Martins.

I dont have any kids, but it is likely with electric and ever more autonomous driving on speed restricted roads, that driving for pleasure really will be a niche past time for old age pensioners who can remember different times

Three actually. The cheaper one can now be ordered with default closed or open.

The factory setting includes; Open 0 to about 1,500 rpm.
That is why some people like to have the option, of an Always Closed setting.

I have never been sure whether the Open 0 to about 1,500 rpm, only applies at cold start.
It does seem noisier at tickover after a cold start, than later on when warm.
Does anyone here know ?

I don't know whether the following might apply to a V12VS (which I think has 4 cats), but on a 4.7 V8, my experience of the exhaust remote or fuse 22/15 removal, was that it made little noticeable difference to the exhaust sound.

As suggested above, I then had a subsequent cat modification and that released the full orchestra.
Still quiet in the cabin at steady throttle, but press the accelerator and - wow, just right.
On the 4.7 cars up to 2010, there is no need to replace the standard (single) pair of cats. It just needs an internal 'tweak'.

Try the remote first, then you can always look at cats afterwards, if you wish.
