Hi all.

A few weeks back my parking sensors in my 08 DB9V stopped working. I initially noticed that the reversing sensors were not making a louder/ more frequent noise as I got closer to another object/vehicle. When putting it into R, i get a 3 second constant beep and then nothing. I then noticed that my front sensors were not making any noise either - i assume this is because theyre all linked?

Anyways, I used the old toilet roll trick to find that my lower back left sensor is not ticking (all the rest front and back are) - its the one down on the plastic-grill section. So I assume I am in need of a new sensor.

The car is still under warranty (within 3 months of dealer purchase), so i got in touch with them - who told me to speak to my local AM who will diagnose and replace the sensor, and then I will be reimbursed. Even though I know i have a faulty sensor, the warranty wont pay unless the garage tells them the issue. I tried my local AM dealer, who told me they charge £250 p/h labour, and unfortunately the warranty will only cover up to £120 p/h - so no use there. The warranty company then told me as it was a simple issue of a parking sensor, that any VAT registered garage will be able to sort it. Have taken it to my local garage who ran all their diagnostics on it - but said they are getting nothing back because they dont have the specific AM diagnostics tools - therefore cannot diagnose and cant be replaced with them through the warranty.

Essentially I am looking for some advice please on what my options are now - am i correct in my diagnosis of just a faulty sensor? If so is this something I can source and fit myself? Or if not, what i should try next! For reference, my local AM dealer quoted me £180 to replace and fit a new sensor - but i feel this is extortionate.

Many thanks in advance

The classic trouble-shooting answer would be to swap it with another one and see if the fault moves. How practical/possible that is I don't know.

Sounds like the supplying dealer is offering to reimburse you directly, ie not a warranty claim. But I'd want it in writing before committing expenditure.

They said unless the garage get in touch officially telling them the issue and the cost to replace, they wont pay out. Local garage have said if i supply the sensor then they will fit for £90. It still seems frustrating that theres no workaround re. getting it covered on the warranty!

IANAL but it would seem to me to be the supplying dealer’s problem to sort out. If they are not AM specialists & have to cart the car off to an AM dealer to fix themselves then so be it, but telling you to do the legwork in getting it fixed doesn’t sound acceptable to me.

They’re totally stubborn on the fact that I get the work done and they reimburse- but so far it seems the only option is back to AM and then I pick up the shortfall of the hourly diagnostics rate. Seems like a right pain and a crap warranty!

I’m sorry to hear of your troubles, at least it’s not a major mechanical issue!
The only other thing I can think of is taking the car to a recognised AM independent specialist. They will have the AMDS to diagnose the problem & wouldn’t charge the extortionate labour rates.

You bought it less than three months ago so laws apply; I suspect they may be making life difficult for you.

From the Consumer Rights Act https://www.which.co.uk/consumer-rights/regulation... :

'30 days - six months you must give the retailer one opportunity to repair or replace it before you can claim a refund'

Obviously you won't be claiming a refund for the car but you get the point.

How far away are they?

This may be one for the Business forum as it's more of a legal issue than an Aston issue.

Do everything in writing. Stay polite. Don't write/send stuff if you're emotional. Good luck!

Do any local garages have the correct diagnostic tools for this? Or just specialists/dealers?

I am in a similar situation but all sensors appear to be ticking appropriately, so will need the diagnostics. Keen to avoid main dealer diagnostic costs.

Note that AMDS is only as good as the person using it. Scrotum Motor Company couldn't even find misfires (but a local mechanic with a Foxwell could, and for 1/3 of the price).

It should be possible to diagnose a faulty parking sensor without AMDS... lots of cars have them!
