I scuffed my N/S wing mirror

In avoiding a collision with an oncoming car driving partly over the white line, I had to move too close to the wall on the nearside and caught the wing mirror. The mirror was forced into the closed position and the glass popped out suspended by the heater wires. Fortunately, I was able to stop quickly which avoided the mirror from scratching the door. Also, I pulled the wing mirror to the open position and pushed the glass back. Mirror adjustment and memory work fine so I have been very lucky I guess.

Anyone got an idea for dealing with the scrapes?

You could try some clear coat touch-up on the scratches, the exposed fiber might go dark/black again. Otherwise it's a decision between the cost of a new carbon cap vs having a body shop sand and re-clear coat your original.

Get some 2000 grit and gently sand area with water, not dry. The polish off with rubbing compound. I had a minor scratch and was able to remove with this method. Back and forth sand/polish quite a few times. Mine was much less severe than yours. You will probably have to use some clear. Take your time and go slow. Be sure you clean well with alcohol before using any clear. I would use the 2000 to knock the shine down before using the clear, so you can feather it out and not see a line between the original and new lacquer.

I may be wrong, but to my non-expert eye it looks to me that, as well as the scratch lines, the impact has lifted the gel coat off the underlying carbon fibre weave, causing the two grey "bubbles". I doubt if putting or doing anything on top of these will make them go away (but could be wrong) and any attempt to abrade them off would be fraught with the possibility of damaging the carbon fibres underneath as you broke through if there is no longer any covering resin gel.

Your correct. Looking closer at the photo those are bubbles underneath. 2000 grit won’t go that deep, but these need a professional or a new mirror cover.

I have heard that there are very convincing carbon fibre ‘wraps’ available thesedays. Just a thought.
