Hi everyone, just changed oil and filter in my DB9. Left sump plug out over night to get as much off the old oil out. Replaced filter and filled with Mobil1 0w-40 oil. On start up got horrible rattle which sounded like the timing chain. Does the chain tensioner need priming? Any advice appreciated.

You'll have starved the top end while it fills the filter etc. There's a process involving the use of full throttle which enables you to crank the engine without it actually starting. Do this a couple of times until the oil pressure light goes out.

It is a moment of faith to put your foot to the floor and then press the start button for the first time ! I would use this whenever I had not driven the car for some weeks.

Has anyone heard from anybody who has relocated the PCV valves in order to inspect and replace as required without having to strip off the inlet manifolds? After all it's only a one way valve

When I had the inlets off for coils and plugs i redid all the PCV system in performance silicone hose and decent joiners/splitters as the original plastic ones where clearly aged and brittle.
All the way from the oil seperators on the block right up to the connection at the inlet side of the throttle body. It also looks better than the plastic hard tube that previously appeared from under the let's and go over the valve covers.

I had foresight to move the PCV valves up slightly and use clips so I can access/remove them just by pull the injector rails off and placing to the side.

That sounds great, any photos? Looking at different PCV valves, the ford one used on the pinto engine is made of steel. Would you recommend this?

Sorry no pictures of the finished product, I can get a pic tomorrow but all you'll see is the silicone breather house to each TB. I did the PCV system and threw houses from the back of the manifolds to the fuel pressure switches in each fuel rail.

I do have a picture of the original setup....

Out of sight it if mind? However you look at it, AM did a short job on this.

I did get a couple of the metal valves but end up getting a couple if the original plastic Ford ones posted from the US.

The plastic Ford valves are only part of the set up, there’s some rubber “ducks bill” one way valves built into the pipe work, they get hard and brittle and break up eventually, I believe it’s these valves failing that cause our oil pullover problems

That's great, thank you. I have a problem with a rattle from the top end, sounds like timing chain. Only happened after oil change. Once the car is warm it disappears. Can anyone please help.

Just for clarity, the duck bill valves are part of the PCV system but not in the pipe work from the oil seperators to the TB (where the PCVs sit). They are in the fresh air makeup pipes which come off the plastic induction pipe just before the TB,then change to a metal pipe, run along the block then up and into the valve covers.

Still have a rattle. Could it be the idle wheels. If I take the sepertine belt off and start the engine, will I cause any problems?

These engines are not supposed to rattle. Are you sure you aren't brewing a serious engine failure? As someone whose engine went bang recently (without warning), I would highly recommend you get it looked at by someone who knows what they're listening to. Are you near one of the good independents? Believe me, the bill if you have a catastrophic engine failure is utterly eye-watering.

Sound advice from Pete , I’ve been trying to think what could cause this and can’t, the fact that it occurred after the oil was changed points to timing chain tensioner ,tappets etc, but then it goes away when warm.
I wouldn’t run it anymore until it’s been sorted, here comes the SFQ , did you get OE oil filter from AM.
Sorry had to ask

Not knowing whereabouts you are in SE Wales, but Newport is 70 miles from David Appleby Engineering in Wellington, Somerset. They're very highly rated as AM specialists.

Thanks very much. Would you recommend taking it there rather than Aston in Bristol?
