I’m going to view two DB11s today. One a Volante the other a Coupe.

If I had a preference it would be the Volante but condition, mileage and Service History are the main factors.

Anything in particular I should look out for?

Both are at Grange AM Brentwood.

Not really. Great cars. Are they both V8?

If so, it’s down to whether you want the wind in your hair or not.

If one’s a V12, you get similar torque and acceleration (as the V12 is heavily restricted in DB11 application), more top end power with the bigger motor, and, if such things matters to you, the bragging rights of the larger one being both a V12 and an Aston Martin engine.

The M177 AMG V8 is a fabulous engine though, and it makes for a lighter, sharper, and significantly more fuel efficient car, the reduction in mass offsets the lower power, making both cars more or less equally quick.

The V12 can maybe be given a slight edge in acceleration with a simple AMR software upgrade which costs a main dealer nothing, it’s fair to say it would probably lose said edge in the bends.

Most DB11 customers went for the V8.

As ever - test drive as many as possible and choose what’s right for you. Anything like this is always highly subjective, listen to yourself. There are no major problems with any of them.

Best of luck, and don’t forget to post a photo. For some odd reason, it’s really hard to take a decent photo of a DB11.

Thanks for the information.

I’ll post how I get on.

One other factor to remember (and I don't know if it's relevant for you) but the rear seats and luggage volume are more compromised in the Volante, purely from the need to accommodate the folding hood

Well I loved both the cars but my heart says theVolante.

Sadly we were unable to agree the PX Exchange price therefore I didn’t get to drive either car. I’m sure I will love it but I’m not prepared to commit until I have had a decent test drive, 2/3 hours. The sales guy did offer to take us out but I declined.

I have a good friend who has offered to let me try his car but I will try another dealership first.

Also I was only offered a 6 month warranty which doesn’t impress me as with a secondhand Porsche OPC you get 2 years? Servicing once per year approx £700 with extra charges for the bigger items when due.

So what next, I will sell my current car privately or SOR with an OPC. Once I have the cash I’ll look around to see what is available.

Doesn’t seem a lot of point using a main dealer on the described terms unless I’ve somehow misunderstood. No issues with Grange it’s their business so they are entitled to run it as they see fit.

That's bonkers. When I bought my Vanquish Notts let me have a car for half a day, unaccompanied.

I am pretty certain if it's a Timeless car it must be supplied with 12 months warranty.

This. When I was looking to buy a Vantage I travelled to various main AML dealers to drive cars to see to eliminate versions I didn't like and never had a problem with any of the dealers. Some (most, to be fair) came out with me, and you can always expect a sales pitch at the end. Mind you, I was a cash buyer and not looking to part-ex, so maybe that's a difference.

Since I bought mine I've driven a V12 Vantage at my local Grange dealer and they just tossed me the keys and said "It's yours for a couple of hours". Paperwork first, obviously. There's always paperwork - and licence copying

The advert says 'Timeless Certified Pre-Owned', if that's the same thing: https://www.grange.co.uk/used-cars/aston-martin/db...

So they expected you to agree a price before you could drive it? Balls to that I say.

What is your current car?

Just go elsewhere if any dealer won’t let you do as many test drives of as many different cars for as you need as a serious potential customer. That’s what the demonstrators are for.

I know you seem locked on a V8, but if you get the chance, have a blat in the V12, it’s a bit of a different animal, heavier but so very smooth. More than the V8, under very hard acceleration the V12 still genuinely feels like it isn’t even trying. You never know whether you might like that strange feeling until you try it smile

Thanks for the replies and thoughts.

I’ve dealt with my OPC since the early 80s and they will let me take a car for the day.

Maybe I’ve been spoiled.

I will try a V12 as it does appeal but I want to stay within my budget which is a max of £120K. Like a previous poster I generally always pay cash, especially now, to avoid interest payments.

I bought from Brentwood and they were excellent, did the test drive and then decided on a price after, my offer was accepted once someone had agreed

Came with 12 months timeless warranty plus 2 months left over from the previous owner, even got me the Aston Martin first aid kit thrown in

They were great to deal with

So the dealer did offer you a test drive without the px agreement. That being said, if you want a decent test drive of 2 or 3 hours you need a demonstrator, I doubt they will let a timeless car out for such an extended period I suspect (or at least the two dealers I have spoken to won't).

All timeless cars are 12 months from point of sale end of story, you will be emailed the documents from Car Care Plan. Not sure where the 6 months has appeared from...

All DB11, Vantage and DBS come with 5 years free servicing, the DBX is only 3 as an exception to the rest of the range. So it would come with the balance of that.

All in all it just comes across as you had someone incompetent at a main dealer. I cannot say I am surprised though...

1) One source - Grange got fined by Gaydon for holding timeless stock back from sale to keep prices higher. I have seen some level of evidence of that
2) Aftersales side well my ex Gaydon contact said 2 dealers were amongst the most common to be returned to factory or get someone from technical at Gaydon to look at them for relatively obvious issues. A particular Grange franchise being one and the other being Sytner....

If I interpret it correctly, only as a passenger - in which case it's not a test drive but a test sit!

Seems the OP got a different salesman. If you're really interested in the car I'd push a bit harder.

Clearly you have a relationship with your Porsche dealer but you would definitely expect better than you experienced with Aston.
Don’t know where you are in the Country but happy to speak to Aston Martin Works to see if they can assist.

I had a not too dissimilar experience on a used car at Grange in Hatfield. I had arranged a viewing and we looked around the car, the salesman said I could only drive it if we had pretty much agreed a deal on the car. My interpretation is that most of their used stock is actually customer's cars either on SOR or more likely they have agreed a purchase price if they can get a customer to buy and they take the difference after prep and warranty costs. He did let me drive their new car demonstrator saying that pretty much all the AMG Vantages will drive the same so it's just a matter of finding the right colour and options. After we returned he then showed me photos of cars he had previously sold with the implication that if there was one I wanted he could probably get a deal done.
