I have a very rusty EGR valve that's spoiling the look of my otherwise clean engine bay.

Plan on removing, cleaning and painting it to make it look better.

How to remove the EGR valve?

Is it simply a case of undoing the hose that threads into the front (standing looking at the engine), remove electrical connector and remove the 2 mounting bolts?

Cheers

Yes. I had to remove mine in order to reach the offside engine hanging point of a strut beam a couple of years ago (when changing the timing cover oil seal). I don't remember the details, but you plan looks right enough. It all went back together ok and no ill effects. Mine is also unplated, but only a light dusting of iron oxide.

You may need to get a replacement gasket for refitting.

The Part No is 6G33-35-10625. It costs around £10.

Cheers I did wonder about that. Seems to be a thin metal gasket. Makes sense to replace it.

Is the hose sealed in any way? O-ring or thread sealant?

IIRC, the pipe connection has an olive which reseals ok dry. The gasket appears to be stainless steel, and I re-used it dry.

Cheers.

Final question - if anyone knows...

Will the car run with the EGR removed? I will try and clean and paint it in one go but if it means I need to wait overnight for paint to go off of whatever I'll need to out the car back into the garage overnight and it can't be pushed in - needs to be driven. Will only need to run for 1 min or so.

I would be content, but I would also try to plug the pipe to some extent, maybe an asbestos type rope

It is possible to paint it in situ. I used a Dremel to clean the rust off and applied some heat resistant black paint with a tiny brush. It looks fine and didn't have to worry about disturbing the seal.

Then fill your boots. Plenty to take apart on an Aston!
