Vantage - remove some road noise
Discussion
Just a Monday musing.
My main niggle is the amount of tyre road noise I get. I know the V12VS is not a GT, but maybe, just maybe if a bit of sound reading could be added, it could drop the noise slightly and it would be much better on long trips. I already put new PS4S's on, and that has helped, but not enough.
Found this thread, but nothing else - anyone got any ideas? May talk to Aston Installations or AM Performance.

I think you’d end up spending an inordinate amount of time and/or money to achieve a very modest improvement in NVH.
It might be tyre noise, but it depends how it’s getting into the cabin - if it being transmitted mechanically (through wishbones, shock mounts, driveshafts etc) you’ll struggle to stop it. From the small bits of interior I’ve taken out of my V8V, there’s already a lot of sound-deadening material in the cabin, so I doubt a bit extra will help.
If you want a quieter Aston, you probably need to change model….

I am very fussy regarding tyre noise in my daily driver.
The engine is very quiet, so unpleasant tyre noise becomes the dominant cabin sound. After years of putting up with this, another tyre change became due and I chose Michelin Primacy 4. They had the same 68db rating as the previous Dunlops, but the cabin became so much quieter. Finally the solution was discovered.
However, I don't object to cabin noise in my Vantage. Fortunately the orchestra does not consist of just a tyre noise solo.
They probably don't make Primacy in Vantage size.
Granted, on cheap UK roads… where they chuck a load of tar and gravel down and expect drivers to do the compaction and finishing touches to the surface (which is my second biggest bugbear after gritters distributing car rot when it’s +4°C), it’s noiser. But on properly laid roads (anything in Wales when the EU paid for the good stuff), decent motorways, etc. it’s surprisingly GT-like.
Several things to overcome to make it quieter that’s no very practical. Especially tyres wide enough to not be freaked out by nearly 600bhp.
Perhaps the DB12 is more suitable?

It's pretty interesting as our V8V is a lot quieter than our Honda Civic type R and 911. It's an order on magnitude quieter than our Lotus Elise, which I drive with noise cancelling ear buds now. Did the V12S have any less noise insulation than the V8V? (Hard to imagine as she's a heavy old girl.)
Assuming there's nothing wrong (bushes, shocks etc) then the tyre wheel combo can make a significant difference. Our 911 had a very annoying tyre roar, we always ran it on the original OEM Porsche specific Michelin PS2 tyres with original factory wheels. Changing to PS4S was an improvement but when I changed the wheels to some very lightweight motorsport wheels with the PS4S it became noticeably less of an issue.
I suspect some combinations just ring(probably resonate) on certain road surfaces.

As someone suggested above, bought myself a pressie for xmas. These do work, although it's a bit strange in almost total silence with the odd background noise getting in!
Please speak up when you type. I cannot hear you. -

This stylish hat is very good. You won't hear any road noise at all wearing this. Only £20.
Also extremely useful, if your passenger has an annoying habit of making comments about your driving.

That orange will clash with the red though ??
Yes, you are quite right.
Gaydon should be able to help though.
They can put the stylish hat in one of their 'Nappie Wrap' protectors, on the regular paint shuttle to St. Athan. The high quality paint facility there, will be able to match your lovely seat belt colour and also guarantee (sorry not in writing) that there will never be any paint bubbles.
With Welshness incorporated, every effort will be made not to scratch it on the return journey to Gaydon, but if the worst happens, there is another paint facility at Gaydon, so a quick spray should fix any transit damage.
Hope the Time and Motion Department, never find out about all the Aston Martin car bodies, going on 350 mile round trips to Wales.
How long will that journey take, when the Welsh 20 mph speed limit is extended to the M4?

Having come from multiple 911s I find the road noise really low .
Which is one of the key reasons why I now own a V8V. I'd always considered a 911 (the "useable supercar") as a car I'd like to own...until I actually drove one and couldn't believe the cacophony from behind me on a motorway.Gassing Station | Aston Martin | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
