What is an EORI Number? Do I need one?
Discussion
I'm based in the UK and trying to by some aston parts from a breakers in Holland. They tell me I need something called an EORI number, otherwise they cannot help me. It looks to be a registration number for a business that imports/exports in an out of the EU, but I'm just Joe Bloggs who wants to buy something, not a company
Anyone else had this experience??

An internet search should resolve your query. I found that this does apply to individuals as well as businesses.
I had never heard EORI before, but when I read your post I was immediately reminded of the ELARWIs.
They are an ancient tribe of people, who are only 5 feet tall and who live amongst grasses 6 feet high.
All day they jump up shouting, where the ELARWI.

Well, the government page is the one you want, and you can share that with the company as proof as its a Gov site.
No chance you need this kind of documentation for just importing a car part for personal use. Some extra Brexit import taxes to bear in mind though!

I wonder if eBay bothers with EORI numbers?
We run our own business and had to register for an EORI number as we often ship abroad and sometimes buy from abroad. It's sometimes needed but we do make a point of clearly writing it on any attached documentation.
It's quite easy to get via the gov website, and although it said that it might take a day or two to be issued, it did take about an hour to come through. That number is then unique to you or your business.
Whether it's actually required for private purchases from abroad I doubt, but quite a few foreigners think it is required.

As a business we've had an EORI number for several years however, it is sometime possible to use the EORI number of a carrier they use to post the items out. I know if dealing with ECPS in Poland they don't ask for EORI.
As others have pointed out there will be duty to pay on the item you are buying.

Thank you for all the comments. Its clearly a confusing subject with different viewpoints, and I certainly don’t blame the Dutch seller for insisting on having an EORI number.
In the end I registered as an individual on the HMRC website. Its really quick and easy (3-4 minutes) and I got a number immediately at the end of the process.
