Try the Manchester Evening News, as an alternative, if that might fit more to your taste.
Perhaps the story is written in a different and more balanced way.
The sequence of the events are probably the same.

Expect you already know, that anyone to the right of Karl Marx, must now be considered a Far Right person.

Nobody mentioned politics until you did Jon. I'm assuming that guyvert1 meant that the Daily Mail is just trash these days and nobody takes it seriously any more - H&S stops it being used to wrap chips, plus it's a tabloid. Its online presence is even worse and is basically clickbait - just look down the RHS of your link. Private Eye refers to it as "The Doolally Mail"Perhaps the story is written in a different and more balanced way.

I think the 'connection' is that the DM is read by stupid people, and all people not left/liberal are stupid, therefore all DM readers are Adolf Hitler
Well, at 20 years old with an Aston sitting there I am not sure whether I would have made the sensible decision at the time. Easy to look back now , especially after the car was crashed of course, but I did some crazy stuff at that age. Was poor so no possibility of anything remotely like this kid. In a way lack of access was a good thing I expect.
Not defending the idiocy of the act, merely thinking that he probably thought nothing could go wrong. We are all talented and sharp F1 drivers here, but we were so much more invincible then I imagine.

Car theft, drunk driving, no insurance, £120 fine.

I was going to leave this thread now that it is turning political (after all, Godwin's Rule has already been invoked; hopefully the mods will get tired and move this from the Aston Martin area). Thats what makes the uk a laughing stock.
However, your post made me think. Initially, you seem to have a point. But then I wondered what benefit there would be in imposing a more severe penalty? As a drunk driver he's automatically been banned from driving. No-one bar him was hurt and there will probably be a civil claim for the fence/hedge (reports vary). I doubt his father shrugged off the loss of his Aston and I think it unlikely an insurance company will pay out as it was trashed by a family member. What would you like? Bigger fine? Jail him? He's 20 and works for his father, so guess where a bigger fine will come from, plus you can't penalise someone based on the wealth of a family member. And I'm not sure what some time at His Majesty's Pleasure will achieve.
OP's privilege to challenge suspected introduction of political reference.
I think he has gone away now though.
The Aston Martin DBS was reportedly cut by the fire brigade, so if it was a Coupe, it might now be a Volante. Very likely to be deemed an uneconomic repair.
For an insurer to cover the claim, the family member must be reported for 'taking the vehicle without consent'.
It would not be categorised as theft, because 'with intention to deprive', a requirement of the theft act, was probably not applicable.
With such a high value involved, the insurer might 'wriggle'.
