Well, another V8 Vantage has succombed to thermostat failure! My 2006 model had an issue with the temperature gauge only going to a quarter on the dial, not half. This was an intermittent problem, but everything pointed to thermostat failure, so it was added to the list of things to do this winter.

Anyway, I started to strip it apart yesterday and finished it today. The hardest part was getting the thermostat out of the housing as you have to both press and twist at the same time. Anyway, it came out eventually, so can be replaced tomorrow.

As always, it looks like the rubber seal has come away from the flange and was getting caught in the spring. Common problem and its recommended the thermostat is replaced every five or six years. I bought a Jaguar one for about £25 - it's the same as the Aston one without the Aston tax!

Other problems - dropping my 'magnet on a telescopic stick' down into the engine bay - doh!

I used another magnet on a stick to get it out. I can honestly say the magnet on a stick is the best tool I've got for the Aston as any bolt dropped doesn't fall to the ground, but lands on the plate under the engine. The magnet has proved very useful.

did not want to use the Motorcraft one that Ford redesigned to resolve that problem?

I didn't know that one existed. I'll file it away mentally for the next time. I've only just put it all back together - it can wait!
