I wanted to ask before I tackle this. For 2013 or newer (Gen 2) with single lamp style.
I don't want to do something stupid and mess up the headlight lens.

One of the lens has become discolored and has a small bit of clouding.
Not sure if any film is on the lens or not.
Is this safe to do a normal headlight polish?

You can simply use a headlight renovator with a random orbital polisher and a soft flap. Max power 5. If you are not sure, any body shop will do it for a short time.

If it's on the surface and doesn't go in too far you can do it. The scary bit is sanding the plastic until it's completely matt!

I used https://www.amazon.co.uk/Autoglym-Headlight-Restor...

Follow the instructions and do every stage carefully and well.

I tried the Autoglym restorer on one of my headlamps today. Didn’t work….

The anti-scratch coating has crazed quite badly, but it’s still touch enough that half an hour with the 800-grit paper hardly made any difference at all.

I’m not convinced that attacking it with coarser grit is a good idea, so it looks like I’ll have to find a good secondhand unit

Is that an aftermarket thing? I'm sure mine didn't have it.

Which generation of cars are we talking about?
It might make a difference - don't know.

Not sure - it’s an ‘07 V8V, although I have a feeling that the headlamp isn’t original - the car had a minor bump with a previous owner and the n/s headlamp is in poor condition, but the o/s is perfect. I suspect someone fitted a cheap secondhand unit.

Regardless, there’s some king of coating on it, which is where all the crazing is. Once through it, the Perspex polishes up OK, but it’s a nightmare to get through.

I’ll probably replace it with a really good unit, then have a proper go at the current unit once it’s off the car.

Another grand onto the expenditure list….

'Another Sodding Thousand On Notmuch'...

If you can get the current unit decent then it will certainly sell well on eBay to get you some money back.

My car failed its MOT last time on a dodgy rear light. By great luck I found a working one on eBay for £350 - and sold the busted one for £325!

Hi Nigel,

If you attack it with wet and dry emery paper I bet you can improve it. Start with 600 grit, then move to 800, then 1000,and finish with 1200.

Keep it wet all the time. Go until the entire headlight is matt, but don't panic!

Once you finish with the 1200, try polishing it with some headlight polish, preferably with an orbital polisher and a fluffy mop.
Should come up like new. It's nerve-racking, but worth it in the end.

What have you got to loose?
