Any ideas on this V8V intermittent engine ticking noise?
Discussion
Hi All
Any help / ideas would be appreciated - I have a ticking sound (quite loud) that begins 60 seconds after a cold start and then lasts for around 45 seconds and after that it disappears completely until the next cold start. Video below (sound starts 15secs into vid). It has got me worried!! The noise comes from the top front right of the engine - initially I thought it was a pulley but it seems to be under the cam cover.
I suspect I will need to book it in with an engine specialist... It is a 2008 4.3L V8V and has done 35K miles.
Thanks in advance....

Thanks Nigel_O. I have checked the oil monthly and it hasn't moved from the Max line. Checked again last night before doing the vid. Last service was June 2024 - a major by P&L and I have covered 1,100 miles this year. The oil still looks new on the dipstick.
The odd thing (and I should have mentioned this in my first post) is that it doesn't always make the noise (probably does it in 7 out of 10 starts....)

Semi-educated guess - hydraulic tappet not filling with oil properly until it has been running for a couple of minutes.
When was your last oil change (and sorry if it’s blindingly obvious - when do you last check your oil level?)

Yup - still sounds like a slightly duff hydraulic tappet, but just intermittent, rather than all the time.It needs checking ASAP though - not sure what camshaft oil feeds look like on a Vantage, but if a cam lobe is running dry against a tappet, you’re risking damage.
Not sure if there’s a ‘quick n dirty’ solution, like flushing the oil. I rather suspect that changing the tappet won’t be cheap, as the cams will have to come out.
I’d suggest your next task is to get your main dealer / Indy to watch the video. Before I heard it, I wondered if it was going to be a noisy injector, but that definitely sounds quite mechanical.
Good luck
Thanks all for the advice. I have booked it into Quantum Works for further investigation and a service. Tried BR but for some reason I couldn’t get hold of them.
I will let you know what it is in the end (hopefully wont be too painful for the bank balance as this car has been very kind to me so far ……)
