V8v 4.3/4.7 200 cell cats how loud?
Discussion
Im going to bamford rose end of this month for their stage 1 package cats air box and flap switch map
I have been told 200 cell cats will add quite alot of volume almost asbo with valves open
To get resonated or not in following circumstance is the question
I do plan to fit top gear manifolds as they fit standard length cats and fit a smaller starter later on please reserve judgement on the manifolds
With the manifolds in mind is it better to get resonated cats or not i have no idea how much of a difference in noise it will make
Im guessing resonated 200 cells will still be noticeably louder than stock?
Or just get un resonated and even with manifolds with flaps closed its fairly quiet?
Those who have done anything similar please share your thoughts
Thank you
Jaf

Go with resonated cats , I have VAP headers . 100 cell cats and X pipe with OEM rear muffler..Quiet while idling and crusing but howls when going thur' the rev range Also have more BHP and better economy and more get up & go.
Thanks sydneyDo you have resonated cats and flap switch ?

I d be against resonated, I have 200 cel cats with the air
Box mod and tbh I d like a bit more volume, especially at low revs, Might do manifolds or even Gt4 rear pipes next
When you close the flaps is it plenty quietBox mod and tbh I d like a bit more volume, especially at low revs, Might do manifolds or even Gt4 rear pipes next
The low rev noise is more the air box induction sound i found out, my car came with some random holes in air box which i sealed up and lost the gargly resanance sound when u put high throttle load at low rpm

I ve no clue what it sounds like with flaps closed tbh despite buying the cccharger that is default to always opened, I ve not closed them since the cats were fitted lol it cruises along at low revs pretty quietlyThe low rev noise is more the air box induction sound i found out, my car came with some random holes in air box which i sealed up and lost the gargly resanance sound when u put high throttle load at low rpm

If it cruises quietly with 200 cell cats with flaps open
Then even with manifolds loudness is not a real issue I guess especially when u can close flaps on a button
Thank you Mark
I have to balance that with a thread on here recently where a guy fitted 200 cels and thinks they’re much too loud…..we all have different thoughts on volume! Then even with manifolds loudness is not a real issue I guess especially when u can close flaps on a button
Thank you Mark
Hi, I had the same doubts as you. I ordered the 200 cells from top gear. If you use them without a 22 fuse they are really too noisy. In the city you have to travel carefully and for long journeys I can't hear the radio at 150 kilometers per hour and poor ears. The sound is a non-aston martin bark in my opinion.
I bought the 2-way control but if you set it to closed valves even after 2,000 /2500 rpm it doesn't change the noise you have to open every time.
The solution is 200 cells with 22 spindles. So in the city you walk around with a nice noise and when you crush they open up and you have the noise you want!

I think with the 3 way switch it can remain locked closed wont change with rpm
Not sure on the top gear 200 cells but ill be getting bamford rose 200 cell with or without resonater and top gear manifolds in the future

For 2005 to 2010 era V8 Vantage models, the perfect and cheapest solution is to adapt the original cats.
The result is then 400 cell cats, which produces exactly the exhaust sound that many owners want. Reasonably loud duing modest throttle use, then fantastic under fulll acceleration.
A wired 3-way switch is able to muffle the sound when appropriate.
I understand now though, that workshops will no longer carry out that alteration, so DiIY might be the only option.

I wont be doing that im going for a package from bamford rose and the benefit is sell the oem cats for circa 800

The 200 cell cats sound glorious in my opinion.
I’d research the heat shielding regarding the manifolds.
Interesting re the OEM cats. I assumed mine would be in the boot when I drove off, but they weren’t. Didn’t think to ask, as this has always been the case with other upgrades to cars.

Alot of people dont ask but i aint letting 800 pounds go to themI d research the heat shielding regarding the manifolds.

Im not worrid about heat shield it will be easy to fab/mould somthing up along with a smaller lighter starter motor thats less prone to heat soak and seizing.
Im just concerned about the volume with manifolds and cats i dont want drone with the flaps closed or lose the ability to stealth drive hence i think it will be safer just to get resonated ones

I also sold mine on eBay for around 600 GBP if I recall it correctly, they went to Las Vegas.Im not worrid about heat shield it will be easy to fab/mould somthing up along with a smaller lighter starter motor thats less prone to heat soak and seizing.

Alternatives tend to be quite expensive.
It was BR who recommended and implemented the adjustment package for me.
The result is perfect, very loud when wanted and even quieter than OEM when wanted.
The OEM cats remain looking exactly as original, because there is no cutting of the external casings.
Perhaps your V8 Vantage is a later car than 2010, therefore not applicable, but anyway, BR won't do that package any more.
This all appears to illustrate yet another quirk of our legislation.
Illegal for a motor business to modify the OEM 1,300 cell cats.
Consequently is it really legal therefore, for OEM cats to be removed and to have them replaced by 200 cell cats?
That is a contradiction, especially as the car will make more noise with 200 cell, than 400 cell cats.
I suppose now that we can take £199 worth of goods from a shop, throw the packaging away on the street, walk along a motorway with a protest placard (probably whilst being offered refreshments by the Police) without any consequences, so it was silly of me to even ask the question.

Hi Jaf,
I ve had that exact same package done to my 2012 V8V S and I couldn t be more pleased. There s a definite improvement through the rev range, as the engine revs quicker and pulls cleaner, as well as an improvement in MPG.
THE 3-way switch was a bonus that I didn t expect but it works perfectly. Position 1 is very quiet and sounds like a nice modern sports car. Nothing offensive at any revs and nice if you just fancy a discreet trip through town and a relaxing drive. I do over 8k miles a year, so it s not always driven to excess. Position 2 is hooliganism mode . Very loud at idle and beyond. It s basically to show off and for when the chimp in you comes out to play, lol. Position 3 is the factory standard setting. It gives a big thump as the engine fires in to life, and burbles loudly while cold. Once it warms up, there s a little bit more than standard volume, without being offensive. At roughly 3000rpm the valves open up and it definitely sounds louder than standard but not hideous and doesn t cause drone. That was my biggest concern. If you just happen to be driving at the point of the rev range where the valves are tweaking, you might here a tiny bit of a hum, but it s unlikely.
I m not sure how much of that is helpful and how much is teaching you to suck eggs. Ultimately, it all comes down to personal taste. I think it s a fantastic upgrade and very good value for money.
I had mine done at Bamford Rose, last year. Mike and his team were spot on and I can’t recommend them enough.
If you live anywhere near Kent, I d happily meet up so you can judge for yourself.
Kind regards,
John
