Last time the car went in for a service they commented that there was an oil leak around the air/oil separator (AOS). I didn t think it was too bad so left it. Went in again last week and the same comment was made, so time to change it!

Usually it is the O ring seal that is leaking you probably don't need a new AOS.

So the first thing to do is source a new washer. I got mine from Ebay from a company called Sealwithselo . A pack of five cost just £4.75 delivered.

You need to find a 17mm ID x 3mm C/S Viton FKM FPM O Ring. The Viton part is what it is made of. Viton is better than rubber for oil-based applications apparently.

Once you ve got the O ring(s) you can start. First open the bonnet and locate the air/oil separator. It is hidden underneath the crankcase ventilation valve which is held on by two 8mm bolts. First remove the pipe that goes to this - just squeeze the serrated clip and it should come off. Take the bolts out and remove the crankcase ventilation valve.

Next locate the single 8mm bolt underneath the oil separator that holds it on. Again, take it out it is about 75mm long. You might want to remove one or two of the pipes connected to the separator. It isn t hard.

Once the bolt is out you can wiggle it free from the housing. Clean the air/oil separator (AOS) with white spirit and remove the old O ring with a small screwdriver, making sure you don t damage the plastic.

Put the new O ring on (I added some motor oil to make it easier to fit) and reassemble both the air/oil separator (wiggle it into position) and the crankcase ventilation valve. Make sure the pipework is all put back in the right place. Just three bolts. There, job done!

I ll keep an eye on it and update this story if it is now sealed.
