Issues with supplying dealer
Discussion
Evening all,
I'm just looking for others thoughts on this please...
I bought my 2014 Vantage from an independent dealer on Friday 6th March and drove it home to Glasgow (278 miles).
When I collected the car I was informed that it had a 3 month major mechanical warranty.
On Sunday 8th March I noticed that the vacuum pump for the exhaust valves was rattling like mad behind the rear bumper. A new one of those was ordered from Scuderia Parts and I fitted it. Cost was £153.
Prior to collecting the car I asked the salesman by email if there was any moisture in the rear lights. He replied by email saying both of them were in good condition. On collection day I was smitten and didn't notice but looking back at the pictures I took in the showroom there was moisture in it. Fast forward to 30th March and the LEDs had started failing due to the wetness. A repaired light unit was supplied by Martin's Aston Services in Glasgow at a cost of £500.
On the service invoice in February the air conditioning on the car was recharged by AMP in Cheshire. I noticed the day we collected it that the windows were steaming up slightly for the first few miles but they then cleared so I didn't think much of it. On 21st March I noticed that the air con wasn't working when I drove it in the sun. I checked the pressure with my AC gauges and sure enough it was waaaay down on refrigerant. It turns out there was a leak on the condenser and I assume that's why it was recharged before I bought it. A new condenser has now been fitted at a cost of £310 just for the part.
The front door struts aren't great but I've got a set of them here to replace them.
I am absolutely smitten with the car but due to the issues with the air con I wrote to the supplying dealer on Monday and they've completely ignored me.
Tonight whilst driving the car I noticed that I could see the drivers side light in a reflection on the car in front but I couldn't see the passengers one. I checked when I got home and sure enough the side light LEDs in the passengers side headlight have now failed too.
Part of me thinks that I've bought a 12 year old car and I should just repair the issues and get on with it, however, part of me also thinks that the dealer should be covering some of the costs of these issues as they've all come to light in less then 2 months and under 600 miles since I collected the car.
I reckon they're going to try and hide behind the "3 month major mechanical issues" warranty due to the age of the car but I was just wondering what others thoughts are.
Thanks,
David.

It’s always the challenge of buying a car from a long way away. It sounds like you’ve bought the bits and want them to pay you; I think their take would be that you should have contacted them first and allowed them the opportunity to sort it out at their cost using their labour and trade contacts. But yes, a trading standards / legal mail is your best recourse now.
It’s a myth that aircon needs recharging. Of you see that in an advert, there’s a problem. It doesn’t ‘run out of gas’, it works until the gas leaks out due to a hole in a pipe or radiator/condensor.
Not all dealers are equal. I bought a 996 911 from a backstreet garage back in the day from Yorkshire (I lived in London). The clutch went on the way home. Called the guy, he said get it confirmed and get a price. He paid me what he would have paid to get it sorted and I paid the ‘London premium’ which was a few hundred quid. I though he behaved superbly and I realise now in later life how rare that is…

I've sorted the issues out with the car myself and have only bought the parts for it.
I emailed them and outlined the cost of the parts for the air con condenser and asked if they'd make a contribution seeing as that fault was more then likely present before I purchased the car and they've been totally silent.
When the vacuum pump went I hadn't intended to ask them for anything as I was aware it's a 12 year old car. When the moisture caused an issue in the tail light I grumbled a bit about it as the salesman had put it in writing that the lights were dry and when looking back at the pictures I took in the showroom it was wet.
I'm not going to let it spoil the car for me as I took it out for a good run last night for the first time in a couple of weeks and still love it. It'd just be nice if they'd do the decent thing and contribute to the cost of the air con repair at least.

One of the key achievements of EU consumer law is the liability of professional sellers—as opposed to private sellers—to ensure that the goods they sell are free from defects. Sellers cannot exclude this liability vis-à-vis consumers (end customers). This liability applies for up to six months after the purchase. In this respect, the additional warranty and its limitations are irrelevant.
I would assume that these principles will still apply in the UK after Brexit.
However, this also means that the seller must first be given the opportunity to remedy the defect themselves.

Given your various posts its a shame that you have had these issues and I hope it hasn't removed too much of the gloss and excitement.
If you were hoping to claim off the warranty I'm not sure any of those items would have been covered though although as Yeti says in hindsight better to ask the garage first or at least mention.
Its also a shame that the garage hasn't replied even if negatively.
I would certainly chase them for a reply before pondering your next thought.
I've had 2 condenser's go on my GT8 since new ( car does very low mileage ) and both replaced under the AM warranty but apparently a very common fault on the V8's generally.
Hope the niggles get fixed and you get back to being 100% enthused.

It's certainly not dampened my enjoyment of the car.
In some ways I'm just glad I can tinker myself as our local specialist is booking 6 weeks in advance at the moment and AM in Edinburgh are over an hour away so by being able to repair it myself I can at least get some enjoyment from it.
I'm just looking into having the headlight repaired so that I can keep the car on the road. Thankfully, it's only the sidelight and not the indicator and my MOT isn't due until February.

Bit far for you to travel but hopefully another specialist can help out.
Hi,
That is really frustrating. It’s true that some dealers are better than others, but then you do tend to pay more for the privilege. I decided to buy mine privately and use the savings to put towards future repairs.like you, I’m also quite handy. I also bought one that had big money items such as brakes, clutch and gearbox pipes recently replaced. On the whole I’ve been fairly lucky but I do 8000 miles per year, so there is also going to be something that needs doing. I recently had to send my headlight off for repair, as the led bulbs had stopped working. It’s a fiddle but not too terrible. The cost was roughly £500 including postage and took about 1 week. Details are below. I hope it helps.
