Test drove a AMV8 yesterday with a pre booked appointment. I have the cash - no finance to raise. I am very smart but a young looking 32. Dealer was pleasant enough, spend 20 mins or so looking around the car, talking about it etc. 'Have we time to take the car for a drive?' - .....'erm well do you mind me asking how old you are??

Maybe I am being unfair but it really p@**ed me off.. Surely a discretionary look at my driving license would have given him the answer without potentially loosing a customer. I've heard all the usual comments about snobby dealers etc..he probably did'nt see (unless he thought it was daddys car) that I turned up in my RR Sport..

I was seeting last night and am still a little peeved this morning..

Unfortunately, I don't have the same problem as you do - kind of wish I did. But you could consider it a compliment. In defense of the dealer, they probably do get alot young lads who come in to waste their time, because its an Aston Martin and the stuff of dreams. I would suggest that you call the dealer and tell him in a nice way, that you felt his comments were ageist and that not every young person is there to waste his time, and that in fact you have the cash to buy this car. You expect him to apologise, and to start over with a little more respect or you will 1.) write to the manager of the dealer and 2.) go buy from somebody else. To be fair he probably doesn't even realise that he has hacked you off.

I agree - I should take it as a compliment. AM in Cambridge a few years ago spent 6 hours with me selling me a 25k A4 Cab, absolutely the opposite in terms of service and could not do enough for me. I have remembered that ever since and (assuming they have the right car soon) will definately purchase from them in a heart beat. I have raved about them ever since.

I think what niggles me is I half expect 'not to be taken seriously' so when this happened I was perhaps twice as annoyed..

A high class problem - being 32 and being taken for younger!

Jammy sod hehe

I got ID'd in Alabama when I was 36 and was over the moon...until I realised that it was the house rule and the waitress then proceeded to ask a chap in his 70's!

Now we are bringing out the stories. I remember when it was my birthday and I just turned 18. I was in the military then and had just come back from a war zone on leave. I walked into this strip bar in Los Angeles and they carded me. They let me in but not before they yelled across to the whole bar "This one is only 18!" (at that time you could only drink 3.2% alcahol between 18 and 21 - you were considered old enough to die for your country, but not to drink full strength alcahol) . The whole bar came to a halt, including the strippers on the stage. Boy was it embarrassing. Needless to say I had one drink and left. How sad was that!!

im sure they have even youger potential owners going in ...maybe it was for insurance purposes ...maybe he could have been more tactful and just asked for your licence to photocopy it....wouldnt hold it against them

...if they didnt qualify buyers in any shape or form there would be a queue of 18 year olds every Monday morning at the door smile

I had had several conversations on the phone - initially when I requested what I was looking for, a week later when he called me as he had one in to my spec and asked me to come and view..

I dont really hold it against them, I understand on some level - but I had already had a conversation about my previous car, what I did for a living etc etc - I think tactful (or lack of) is the best way to put it...

I'd be happy if someone thought I was really young... alas it doesn't happen these days :-(
I have a similar problem often in that I have a scar across my face.. (was mugged and slashed across the face with a stanley knife for no reason a few years back) people think I'm some sort of gangster or something and I sometimes get told I'm not welcome...a few examples... had it in a posh shop in California, they pretty much asked me to leave. Went into a posh hotel in Singapore and was told "sorry no rooms", the missus went in straight after and got a room just fine. I was really expecting a similar reaction when buying an Aston but I can say that to their credit my local AM dealer was fantastic right from the moment I walked into the showroom for the first time :-) net result was the sale of a brand new V8V for them and the near certainty that I'll go back to them again for my next car (really could do with 4 seats :-) ).

Whilst we're on these stories - I have one eye - a few years ago I drove to a nightclub, you're not coming in, you're clearly off your face! I told them I had one eye and when hot it closes up etc etc - did'nt believe me. I took my eye out and freaked them out good and proper - they swiftly let me in..

Bloody frustrating. I had a facial infection when i was in my youth but it looked like I had been in a fight and smacked about a lot. The different reactions you got was suprising.

Very narrow minded to treat people that way.

Chill out and be thankfull you look young and not worn out!

PS

You do know that nothing happens when you get offended dont you? I mean it's not like you get offended and then you die or something!

Yeh maybe Ob but I just dont do this modern AFFLICTION of getting offended over the slightest thing real or imagined. It is pathetic to say the least and makes for a very weak and selfish society.

No I can assure you I am most certainly not getting offended, I am merely commenting (as is a forums way) on your post. You came here looking for sympathy and I am giving you an alternative viewpoint which is the joy of a forum (especially this one) smile

I stand by my point. I find it risible that one can get offended merely by being asked a question. Sticks and stones and all that jazz.

So you don't think our society is weak, selfish to the core and lost in any meanigfull sense of direction then? Perhaps we need another ten years of Nue Liebour to help change your mind ROFL

I wouldn't take offence.

Now if he had said 'fk off Sonny', then you might have a point. I would carry on and if any derogatory remarks are made give him one back and see how it goes.
