Front Number Plate Holder or Plate Without Holder???

Hi Guys

Being the indecisive character that I am I can’t decide whether to stick with the standard size number plate on the AM front holder or to remove it and go with either the standard size UK plate or maybe a 3/4 size one.

As always yours thoughts and advice would be most welcomed.

I removed the plinth within minutes of getting my V8V home! I have a 5 digit plate, so trimmed down the excess white space - all totally compliant legal!

first thing I did with mine, nearly 4 years ago....take the big plastic thing off, and put 3/4 plate on....looks far better IMO

One of the first things I did also. However, if you go too short, the plate will not cover the screw holes for the original plate holder.

Take the holder off, then reposition it lower.

Looks much better, and saves a good chunk of weight.

I really, really wish "sportscar" manufacturers would do everything they can to reduce the weight of their cars. There's simply no need for the holder as it is, and it weighs over 1kg. Save similar on 100 items on the car and you start to drop its 1,600kg (!!) girth a lot.

That's a question I posed at the factory last week - they have to fit the plinth to pass the 5mph crash test. It's deformable lump and no damage would occur to the car if it rolled into an immovable object. Without it the nose of the bonnet would hit first!
Even so, it looks rubbish!

Agree it should come off, looks so much better removed, however, it is left on mine as my garage is so small I need the car right up against the wall (foam protected). Numberplate holder is there to stop any damage

A "friend" left his V8 parked and neglected to put the handbrake on. Rolled into the back of a Ford Galaxy with tow bar. Probably less than 5mph to be fair, but there was not a spot of damage to the friend's car

I totally believe this is why the holder's there. But equally don't believe any owners will have genuine issues if they remove it.

I think, if memory serves me correctly, you are allowed to trim the registration plate to allow a 11mm border which I can see quite a few people, like me, have done...

It looks so much better without the guard. I guess you just have to be extra careful not to bump anything.

Just purchased a 56 plate vantage and am having the front bumper painted this week and would also like to change the number plate from the standard mount to have it reduced in size and put directly to the bumper.

Can you let me know the process for this please:

1) Does the new plate get attached using holes create by the original mount or new holes or is it stuck on?
2) We have a 6 digit plate. Do you know the legal minimum size for this
3) What work is involved in removing the original fittings? Do any other parts need to come off for access?

1 Stuck mine on after removing the bracket. Need a socket t star extension to remove
2 keep lettering standard size and cut down plate
3 black plastic surround and metal bracket behind. Simple job with correct tools

The last 2 new Astons I bought the dealer was specifically told NOT to drill the front or back of the car to fit plates and do not fit the plinth.

Always stick my plates on in case a short plate ever takes is place.

3/4 plate and double sided numberplate tape works for me ...one of the first things I did when I got the car was to remove the 5mph impact bumper thing
