I took my V8V upto Works Service Newport Pagnell to have my drivers door looked at as there is a small amount of corrosion around the door handle (not uncommon i gather)but a larger piece of corrossion at the bottom of the door, around two to three inches in length.

When I took it for them to see there didnt seem to be any dissagreement about it but i have just been told that I will have to pay half to get it painted. £395 + vat being my half......

Does this sound right? as it doesnt to me....confused

It rather depends on what the see as being the cause of the problem.

Could be an external cause and they are offering a goodwill gesture.

TBH anti corrosion warranties are normally anti perforation warranties, where corrosion starts on the inside and works it's way out.

Unlikely if your shell/body is aluminium.

Oh right ....

i did query it and got this;

''The car has a 3 year warranty ( including the paintwork), which ran out on 14th March 2009. Unfortunately the contribution they have offered, is purely as a gesture of goodwill, as the warranty ran out approximately 18months ago.''

so confused why there is 10 year anti corrosion warranty that doesnt seem to cover corrossion... confused never had a 'normal' car with this happening to the bodywork, and to be honest i thought this was a thing of the past...

It depends on what they deem to be the root cause of the problem.

I thought at least one person on here had theirs done gratis. But could be wrong.

Regardless, it's a bit rhum sticking to the letter of their corrosion warranty like this. It's happening to so many cars that there is obviously an issue with the paint in these areas that is not influenced by how the car is looked after or used. It'd be nice if they put their hands up and said they'd swallow the cost if a car suffers it. And found a decent solution to keeping paint on the car for at least 10yrs.

(PS yes mine has it smile No I haven't approached them about it yet - it's not bothered me enough to date)

warranties arnt worth the paper the are written on, Im a car painter by trade & own 2 bodyshops,
As some one as already said the warranty only covers rust coming from inside out, If stone chipped area spider rusts, Not covered.
Most 10 year warranties they are talking about chassis & box sections.
Best thing to do is go back to the dealer you purchased it from & leave the problem with them,
They have a lot more sway with the factory as they will want you to be a repeat customer & come back to them for servicing & your new car,

In all my years of working for Car manufacturers I have never seen corrosion that qualified for a warranty claim under the terms of the perforation warranty.

The closest I came was when working for a German manufacturer that had reoccrring issues around boot locks and door frames on one model and tailgate apperture on another due to poor prep/coverage at the factory.

I usually signed these off as "goodwill", regardless.

I had a 9 year old 993 which had corrosion around the sun roof. Was repaired for free by a Porsche Main Dealer.

well i did follow it up and got....;

''I have double checked into the situation and have found the following information.

The 10 year anti corrosion warranty you refer to is for perforation i.e. where a hole that penetrates through the body work caused by corrosion from inside or underside as a result of fault manufacture or materials.''

so, the best thing to do is wait for it to get so bad that it penetrates? great...
frown

so leave it and wait or take their 'good will' gesture of 50% and not being in the business so i dont even know if their offer is even good value or not...

Take their goodwill.

My (non expert) opinion is that this isn't genuine "corrosion" per se, but poor surface prep or choice of materials in the area affected. Either that or some manifestation of bimetallic corrosion (where two non-complimentary materials, eg steel and ali, make contact and react).

Reason for thinking this is that I think the door skins are composite. So can't "rust".

As mentioned, it's a pretty poor show as it's a common problem that's obviously a "fault" of some sort. But they're unlikely to give any more (even at a few hundred per door skin, if most cars suffer there's a lot of cash at stake).

My car doesn't have it (yet, anyway), but I have to say that I think it is very poor of Aston to fail to stand fully behind this problem. Who cares that it's not "corrosion" as defined in the warranty -- it's clearly substandard/faulty workmanship. It's preposterous that cars that are merely a few years old are having issues with paint actually failing. Not just chipping or scratching easily, but actually separating from the car. It doesn't have to be actual corrosion to be a failure of the paint from faulty production. If it can be shown to have originated by external damage then that shouldn't be covered by a warranty (or goodwill), but it's pretty clear that there are far too many cars whose paint is just failing.

Murph, the doors are alumin(i)um, as are the bonnet/hood and (I think) the roof. The front wings/fenders, the sills and the boot/trunk lid are composite, and the rear wings/fenders are steel.

Then I would bet money that there is something behind the skin that is made of steel in that area.

My Caterham did the same. Took 10-12yrs for it to show through though. And that's on a relatively cheap car.

I don't think so, though I can't say with certainty that there isn't. The door beams are extruded aluminum, and the door frame structure is magnesium.

Door handle on drivers side started to 'bubble' at about 9 months old. Dealer was instructed by AM to inspect and take photographs. I had already decided that I would have it seen to at the time of my annual service but I called the dealer about 6 weeks after photographs taken and AM had not responded. I arranged the service date and the dealer confirmed that they would see to the handle whilst the car was in (about another 4 weeks later). I am still not sure if AM ever actually approved or not but the dealer took responsibility and the car is now fine (at no cost to me). Clearly the car was within the three year warranty but it is interesting that the approval process is not instantaneous (even with a dealer involved). There was definitely no sign of the paint being pierced and of course it is all composite material but it does raise questions on the paint process against such materials and AM's willingness to address such issues. The dealer (Broughtons at Cheltenham) gave their usual excellent service.

But it's not all composite material. The door skins are aluminum, and I think (though not sure) the handles are alloy.

Where has everyone else's gone?

Mine's on the leading edge of the door handle aperture. Doesn't seem to go all the way round - looks like a semi-circle of bubbling tracing the front edge of the aperture...

Mine was on the end nearest the back of the car ie the bit that comes out as you pull the handle. Otherwise as you have described

Sorry, you maybe right on individual components. I was having a general discussion with the service team about paint in general. Most of the bodywork won't rust when chipped/scratched etc due to the variety of materials used ( ali, alloy, composite, carbon etc but Aston soft bake approach to paint (because of the materials) does seem to challenge its ability to provide a surface that has a long life. By comparison I drove two new porsches a total of 24000 over 2 years and neither had a single mark on them.

around door handles, a bit on the creases on the wings, a bit on the edge of the roof, a bit on the rear of the hatch

...mmm...actually, I reckon Ive probably got 1 perfect panel on the whole car ...and thats stone chipped LOL

55K miles on, mine is ready for paint on a lot of panels, I cant believe for one minute they will admit to any paint faults...its going to be an epidemic and very costly paying all those dealers to put every fault in every car right frown
