I am thinking of buying a 2004 mazda RX-8, with about 50,000 miles on the clock

Are there any dangers i should look out for in this car? are there any red flags in the service history i should be worried about?

Thanks, J

Hey, theres been a lot of posts about these recently, I'd try a quick forum search as a lot of them have gone into great detail on what can/could/might/does/doesnt go wrong.

Have yourself a look on rx8ownersclub.co.uk too, there's a couple of good FAQs

Basically, the main thing would be (IMHO) to take it for a half hour test drive, turn engine off, give it 10 mins, then try to start it. If it doesn't catch within about 5 seconds, walk away, as it signifies a shagged engine.

Not strictly true, that could be a sign of coil pack failure which is common on the RX8 and relatively simple to fix yourself (having just done so).

Yes exactly the same happened to my dads. Coil packs are about half the price of Mazda dealers on the net too.

had few mazdas over the years mainly rx7 and have been good and bad sides .

as the saying goes how well has it been looked after etc its the same with any car you purchase your walking into the unknown .

they can be a little thirsty though my rx7 used to do low 20s driving like miss daisey not sure on the rx8 though .

WARRANTY WARRANTY WARRANTY !

In the last 18 months my 40k '04 had a new cat, 2 headlamp level sensors, an O2 sensor, a fuel line and finally a new engine. Luckily I bought from a main dealer with a Mazda warranty and everything has been done without question. I dont know what the total cost of repairs was .. £7/8000 ?!?!

I cant say Id buy another one but having said that it does put a smile on my face every time I drive it and now its had the potential RX8 time bomb done ( engine ) I cant see myself parting with it for a while.

Did I mention, DONT BUY WITHOUT A WARRANTY smile

I had a 2006 RX8 231 for 6 or 7 months last year - brilliant car and I thoroughly enjoyed it, I'd say definitely a car worth owning.

I got rid because the lack of torque eventually became annoying, and whilst my car had no reliability issues whatsoever, I had the feeling eventually it would. That said, don't regret owning it at all.
