Hi
Can anyone give me advise on which EVO to buy. Iwill have 8-9k to spend. Should I go for a standard car or modified? Does increasing the BHP seriously affect reliability. Looking at a vii or viii. Have a Chimaera at present and had a 911sc before that. Any advise would be welcome.
Thanks

Get a 6, they're the best, obviously!
Best route is to get standard and then build it up yourself so then you know what parts have been put in, who fitted them and all that. Obviously this will cost a fair amount more than buying one already modded. If you have a really tight budget and will never have enough to mod then there is nothing wrong with buying one that's had all the work done, you can get some great deals out there. Service history is KEY though, esp when buying a car heavily modded. Make sure you know who did the work, and always worth speaking to them incase they know something wrong with it. A heavily modded car can be very reliable as long as the work is done well.
Have you joined the MLR?

Hi there I had a Evo 4 which wasn't there best one but i put a Evo 6 engine in it with ecu ect and it was great, first of all make sure it has had a full service history, second when you start it up switch the ignition on and keep an eye out for the ayc light , it will come one and when you start it, it should go out! If it does light up then you stay away as some one has removed the bulb and that can be expensive, also they have a fluid pot in the boot for the ayc, the fluid should be a lovely red colour, as you find when you test drive it drive it hard round corners if the car makes a noise then same again stay away, the Evo 6 engine was very good, and my one was running 1.5 bar of boost but may mates Evo was running 1.8 so they can take it and that's standard engine! If you need more advise just ask, and I found the best forum for Evo was not the mlr it was called Evo owners club the best car around, very helpful people on there, Frankie
THis Evo 3 in my eyes is a VERY good car.

On a more realistic note, have a look on Mitsubish Lancer Register if you are looking at getting a modded on. loads of info on there and everyone is very willing to help.

When I bought my first Evo, 5 years ago, I would have run a mile from a heavily modified Evo or an import on the basis of you can never know what's been done to them and how, standard power was more than enough, etc. etc.
Five years and several thousand pounds worth of modifications later, if I were to buy one again, I'd do my research and buy one that had been modified to the level, or nearly the level I intended to take it and wouldn't be fussed whether it was a UK or JDM car.
Reason being that (almost all of) the UK cars are to all intents and purposes identical to JDM ones, well modified Evos are just as reliable as standard ones, but are usually around the same price second hand, aftermarket parts can be expensive to buy new and fit and any aftermarket parts that you don't desire on the car can usually make good money selling second hand.
You need to do your research though, as Evos are relatively cheap to buy but expensive to maintain properly. Some at the lower end of the scale (whether the car is modified or not) may have skimped on keeping the car up to scratch and repair bills can be relatively big compared to the cost of the car.
By doing your research properly, I mean go through the history with a fine toothed combe, get an idea of what the car has been used for and form an opinion as to whether the owner(s) may have skimped on it - this can be down to lack of knowledge just as much as lack of money.

I think thats the advantage of something like the MLR forum. Its possiable to pic a car up on there that has been owened by 2 or more people on the forum so the info on the car will be there. Personally the only evo i would be interested in would be a 6 or a 9 unless there was a particularly well upgraded and well priced example of a 7 or 8.
I would look for a standard or very lightly modified car and as said it is nice when some of the cars recent ownership history is up on a forum.
I think you will be best of having some test drives and seeing what you prefer as they really can vary wildly especially when so many are modded.
Something like this looks good:

Thanks for all that info. I have seen a lovely looking Evo6 that has been heavily modified with forged pistons new Turbe etc can run at 410 bhp at 1.75 boost. It is usually run at 0.6 for every day. Only done 1500 miles since engine rebuild.
410bhp isnt much if its been forged. If its been done right it will run forever like that. Many people will run 400 on standard pistons/rods/turbo.Gassing Station | Japanese Chat | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
