Looking for a change to a jap car with a budget of up to 12k. Preferably rwd could be convinced to go 4wd although prefer 2wd. The car would be used to commute, the occasional long journeys and track days.

Current list is below: -

Supra (could be too heavy on consumables any people with experience?)
RX7 - Would need to do a lot of research on that engine
200sx S15

I am also open to other suggestions.

You could get a very good late 1999-2000 RX7 well within your budget and have enough money aside for a re-build and further tuning

Skyline R33 GTR
Skyline R34 GTT
Evo 8/9
350z

Guess it all depends if you want to save some for consumables or blow all 12k

Honestly? E46 M3 or Porsche (996) 911. Not Japanese and prob. more to service, but having had 3 Japanese cars on the bounce that's where my money would go...

2005 2.0ltr STi then get it mapped... You would get a sorted car with low mileage for 12K... Reliable, fairly new, cheap to service (relatively speaking to an Evo)... If your going to track and modify it then the 2.0ltr may be a better choice than the 2.5ltr (better engine, rev happy etc).

Thanks for the advice so far. Strange how german cars were mentioned. Looked at the m3 just they seam very common. Surprised how many people have recommended 4WD cars.

Supra smile

Nothing else compares. Buy a very nice manual for £10k, spend £2k on going bpu+++++ and it will be almost untouchable. If that's not fast enough, go single and be ready to lay waste to some very expensive exotic cars and bikes smile

If he just want to go silly fast down a motorway............

Id buy a 8k DC5 and spend 4k tuning it. biggrin

The RX-7 and Nissan S15 would be definatly high on my list, both are awesome. 12k would get you a mint S15 im sure, dunno about the RX-7.

Because the massive power single turbo one's are usually all about just massive power the power delievery and turbo lag is usually epic, plus there a heavy car.

Id rather be in a RX-7 on track than a Supra.

Ah thats nice, i like Supra's, but he said he's going to track it, and i just feel weight is such a killer on track, and a Supra isn't exactly light.

He has some really nice cars.

350z? 300BHP RWD old school GT. Weighs about the same as a small planet so it'll never set the world on fire but good fun.
Stupidly small boot, no rear seats and 20mpg, but apart from that v nice.

I was in the silver evo extreme with my brother in blue noble.
Indeed VERY sloppy wasn't it. Thank god I looked in my rear view mirror, managed to get out the way of a spinning golf!!!
Had a great time though, very happy I didn't lose it once, came close though!

Go for a nice S15 - sounds like it will tick all of your boxes well. Or a 350Z as a few others have suggested.

Another vote for the S15. Fast, rare, good looking and most people won't know what it is smile

£12k would get you a nice STI SPEC C or EVO 8 MR or even a 9.

If you want rear wheel drive and Japanese i would seriously look at the Supra, very strong engine and gearbox.

As an aside i would also seriously consider and E46 M3 aswell.

I agree with these three options , I wouldnt spend £12k on a Supra or 33 gtr , too old
