Classic Jap WRX STI (circa 96) or UK WRX (with STI body kit)
Discussion
Hopefully I'll be back on the road soon and to lessen the nauseas feeling I get from the prospect of having to drive something like an Astravan (I have 2 big hairy dogs that I need to be able to take places, Newf and Tibetan Mastiff) I have decided to treat myself to something nice for around £3500-4000
I've narrowed it down to a scooby but I can't decide whether to go with a classic Jap import WRX STI (something like http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/2944839.htm) or a UK WRX around 2001ish (something like this http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/2935135.htm)
Just can't decide... any other suggestions are welcome but these versions are coming in with favourable insurance quotes.

Both are modified and the only thing putting me off the classic is the Apexi. So long as it's running absolutely 100% perfect that's just fine however, i've come across a number of classics running Apexi's that have run like bags of s
te or not been mapped properly/in a hurry. IMHO I think the standard OEM ECU with an ESL daughterboard and remap is a much better way forward.
The newage WRX is nice too and very clean. I sincerely hope it's been remapped for the performance mods it currently runs.
Personally i wouldn't have a WRX unless you really need wagon practicality, hence why i bought my bugeye wagon instead of the 4dr STi. I now run a Toyota Surf and have kept my scooby in the garage (being retired) but if there was a next time I would have to buy the STi, modified or not. It won't be any more expensive either way to insure than a modified WRX.
If you can spare any more dosh and want the 4dr try and find a bugeye STi with similar mileage however, it will be more money. Well worth the extra IMHO.

Cheers bud, definitely some food for thought there.
I could always have what ever I bought re-mapped, wouldn't this resolve the issue or would I be looking at possible damage done by a poorly mapped car in the first place?
I could always go more expensive it would just mean having to live with just an astravan on its own for a bit longer... Can I resist ha!

IMHO finding an unmolested example is always the way forward, specially if it's low mileage. No need to worry then about bad remaps or anything else.
Engines and gearbox are bullet proof, Brembo brakes work well and just require different pads to make them really good. Suspension works well enough on UK roads, decent geometry setup makes all the difference to handling and dials out a little of the understeer without resorting to physical mods.
A JDM newage STi would be my choice, of 2003-2004 vintage. Alternatively a 2005 UK STi as it has the DCCD. Depends on how deep your pockets can go.
Either way basic mods like and an Open Source remap for any of these should help keep the costs down and send you on your way to 330-340bhp/lbft+.
