looking to spend £2k, opinions and advice
Discussion
Just like to say hi all first.
I was looking to spend £2k on a 2000-2001 celica 18vvti, but with a bit of nosing through forums that the early engines are prone to oil consumption faults and can't stretch to 02 upwards model.
Really looking for reliable jap car that has decent performance and reliability, and looks.
My 1996 vw 2.0l gti died, so improved performance over this be nice, any ideas or suggestions of diferent jap cars worth looking at.
Thank you

Something like this would be my starting point. The H22 in the Prelude and Accord Type R was a bloody strong engine.

I have a 2001 celica vvti with the engine that is reportedly prone to the oil problems, and I wouldnt be put of buying or reccomending another at all, I have serviced it regularly -oil and filters every 6-10k and it has covered 60k in 2 years and not one thing has gone wrong at all, not one prob.
I have been reliably told aswell that the fault you are talking about with the vvti will manifest immediately in lots of smoke, so if theres no smoke on test drive the problem hasnt occurred so you can prevent it then with reccomended servicing.
subaru turbo cars are pretty hard on fuel so if you have a limited budget (we all do) you will loathe to take it on daily commutes or long drives imo
