Just had the AA do an inspection of a prospective car. Report came back saying it was a fine example of the car except the guy hear a noise when driving it that could be linked to a bearing or something in the gearbox.

So just for peace of mind really i am asking if you guys know of any weak points in the celica's transmission? Its going to toyota for them to have a look at tomorrow before we decide to buy.

Cheers,

It wouldn't be a rattling noise when engine braking from 6k to 2k in pretty much any gear would it? It's a very common problem, Toyota try to pass it off as normal and it normally only occurs on higher mileage cars, although it can happen earlier. It is annoying and it only happens when the engine is warm. I did a full service recently and couldn't find any sign of metal in the gearbox oil, this combined with the fact that it feels fine leads me to believe its likely to be the heat shield on top of the cat (just about visible if you look down the back of the engine between the bulkhead).

Yeah it is! i took it to toyota and they said something about a clutch release bearing or something. Apparently the t-sport uses a modified clutch cable or something and either this one has it or not and it makes an annoying sound. They say its not damaging anything it is just vibration from the clutch plates or something when engine braking. Is that right?

I'd be concerned about them saying it has a modified clutch cable, as it is a hydraulic system!

I had a Corolla and had the same issue. Never caused any problems for the 20k miles I did in it, or any problems for the the guy I sold it to.

Use it as a tool to get yourself a discount though!

I have this same issue in my 03 T-sport, or at least it sounds similar. It's pretty low mileage (50k) so I didn't expect issues so soon!

I hear 2 odd noises - one is the "shhhh" noise when engine braking after the car has warmed up. Not too worried about this one, as it's always been there. Lots of people report this one.

More worrying is a constant high-pitched tinging. It's difficult to describe. This goes away whenever I engage the clutch, leading me to assume it's gearbox related.

It's going to a garage to be checked out soon, but I'd rather not pay main dealer prices to fix it - any information would be helpful and gratefully received!

That's the noise i heard! the one that toyota say is something to do with a clutch plate now as i have managed to re-create it at the lights, neutral, bring the revs up to around 3, then move the clutch pedal up and down, the noise comes in when i bring the clutch pedal up and dissappears completely when it is down.

Mine makes the noise at whatever RPM, although it's harder to hear at higher RPM (obviously). I think it's been getting steadily worse for the last few months.

I did some forum digging when it first appeared and a few people said it was the clutch release bearing, but my mechanic says that since it disappears when the clutch pedal is down, it must be the gearbox bearing rather than the clutch. I'm in the process of getting quotes to get it sorted - so far I have one quote for £900 frown

The toyota guys thought it might be something along those lines and just said when it comes time to replace the clutch they will do the whole thing. He was convinced it wasn't doing any damage but in my own head the noise means friction so sureley something must be rubbing that shouldn't?

Mine had an issue where the gearbox sounded like a bag of pebbles being grounded in a mill. This being the day of collection. Toyota replaced the clutch with an uprated item, 2nd and 3rd gears. (Warranty). I was told it was a recall item, but only something that they replaced when a owner complained about it.

Two years later a metalic rattle developed when between ~2k - 3.5k rpm that sounded like it was coming from the front of the car. Turns out it was a middle-ish heat shield. Except, the metal where the heat shield should connect to had rusted away. The mechanics would nail it in place again only for it to fall out due to rust not long after.

Given my luck with cars I doubt these issues effect all of them, or are easily resolved!

Just wondering if Toyota or any other garage looking at this problem has made a diagnosis yet? Mines been doing it for a while now, still doesnt seem to affect performance but it is starting to annoy me and I'm thinking about pulling the gearbox if it's not the heat shield smile

It would be great to upload some video too to see if we have the same noises!
