Bought an R33 that has a NISMO 320Kph speedo fitted. The speedo needle has been converted to MPH at some point (small MPH white sticker over the Kph original) and appears to read OK when driving around. Does that mean that the odometer now also reads in Miles or is that still reading in Kms? Anyone with knowledge of these conversions who could advise??

I may be wrong but the odometer should have been converted to read miles as well.

sounds like a cheap fix so doubt the odo would have been changed as well

If the speedo face is unchanged (apart from the "MPH" sticker) it suggests the use of an electrical or mechanical converter, which might also correct the odometer.

Probably best to check the odo before and after driving a mile or two. smile

I've got a Toyota Surf and that's an import. All the Surfs i've seen have speedo conversions to show correct mph using a replacement background card that shows both MPH and KMPH rather than stickers over the numbers which sounds a bit cheap and nasty, but the odometer and trip meter still read and display in Km hence it's clear in mine to see it has done 186,000km.

I suppose you could swap over the speedo from an equivalent UK car to show everything in miles but it would need to be clocked to reflect the true mileage of your vehicle and i'm not sure that's such a good thing to do.

Equally, doing the conversion automatically in your head to miles covered comes easy when you do it regularly.

Thanks to all who've replied with useful suggestions. Taking the car out for a run this weekend so will check the odo against actual miles travelled to confirm once and for all.

Your odometer will now clock up in miles, and will be a mixture of kilometres and miles (as of when the convertor was fitted). Technically the odometer should not have been' clocked' to all read in miles but depends on who imported it and carried out the conversion.

Enjoy your car you should have plenty of fun in that!

Doesnt need to be clocked but the odometer reading should have been recorded when the conversion done

For example my Evo was converted at 34,000ks its now reads 54,000 so its 34000 / 1.6 = 21250m plus the 20,000 miles since conversion = 41250m

BUT

and here is the big BUT , many cars are clocked in Japan , used to be a standing joke with jap imports so you should always buy on condition

That's correct! Same with the imports I've had in the past.

Confirmed, it's reading in miles. Took a run down to Abbey Motorsport 26m return SatNav, 26.5m odo. And I did detour slightly on the way back to avoid splitter damage on a very narrow and bumpy country lane.

Now I just need to remortgage the house to pay for the work Abbey are doing!
