The VTEC engine in my old CTR was a much nicer sounding engine than the VVTLI in my Elise, with smoother integration of the two torque curves and a less on/off power delivery.

VVTi = cam phasing where the ECU retards/advances the timing for maximum power

iVTEC and VVTLi = uses both cam phasing and cam lifting, where a second more aggressive cam is lifted into play resulting in more power top end.

VVTLi makes more power per litre.
But in cars iVTEC tend you have higher cubic capacity and more overall pover.
So direct comparison is very hard.

I Wouldnt say the VVTLI makes more power per litre.
What about the 1600cc in the EK9 Type R? 183BHP, and an S2000 engine is 240BHP.

I much prefer the S2000's vtec to the Celica's Vvti, it is more progressive and less artificial and gimicky feeling. Engine note is awful in the toyota too.
S2000 is compared to the VVTL-i, and your very right about the progressive bit, as toyota decided to set the cams to drop the torque just before lift, and thats why it feels gimmicky. It does feel good when you go into lift but a total pain if you change down or change to early and drop into the low torque dip.

On the VTEC its nice and progressive and pulls well through the revs and god only knows why toyota did not do the same.

I have stage 2 cams fitted too my VVTL-i which basically how it should of been in the first place.

Depends on which engine surely. The K20 ivtec has made anything from 160 to 240 ps depending on what application.

Sorry just looked at what I said, and I have made a bit of an accidental nonsensical sweeping statement...
