a real alternative to buying a sapphire cosworth
Discussion
why would you spend upwards or five grand on a 14 year old car, regardless of mileage and condition when you have a real modern alternative in the mazda 6 mps. most models are around 5 or 6 years old, they come with 4wd, and an amazing 256hp engine. don't get me wrong, i love sierra's.. i've had loads of them, but seriously, as a useable day to day car, i'd go for the 6mps every time. and who's to say their value won't go up in the future, as there aren't that many of them around. personally, i have got a 3mps, and will be keeping this till it dies. but after reading the article regarding the old sapphire cozzy, i just thought i needed to post this.
the future is mazda.

We discussed this last night. First of all, you will not get a Sierra Cosworth that is 14 years old. This was pointed out in the last thread. The latest I have seen one registered is 1994. the future is mazda.
The 6 MPS is nothing like a Cosworth. First of all, it doesn't have the badge kudos. What does the MPS badge mean? Reasonably quick Mazdas with little praise for anything other than straight line speed, and incredibly dull styling?
The 6 MPS also has no motorsport history. It will never be seen as anything special, and frankly there are far better sports saloons. If you want to get a modern day Sierra Cosworth, get a Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VI or an Impreza WRX STi. That'll give you the blistering pace you crave, the 4WD and the motorsport heritage/badge kudos.
The 6 MPS is a dull sports saloon. I don't think I've ever heard anyone singing it's praises as a performance car. FWIW, I was mere inches away from buying a Sierra Cosworth last year when I decided it wasn't a realistic daily driver, so I went for an MR2 Turbo instead. A little different, but no doubt just as much of an unruly hooligan of a car.

t about image/badges, a great car is a great car no matter what badge it has, 6mps are awesome cars and more value than alot of stuff, and wont break down as much as similar cars, oh and theyre awesome in the twistysMazda mps is a fairly quick boring car with stupid tax & poor fuel consumption that will disappear into oblivion in a few years time.
The cosworth is a legend & the good ones are a rare find they are not very fast by modern standards nor do they handle very well when stock but they are a 100% classic & will still be around long after the Mazda has gone.

Tbh a standard Sapphire Cosworth doesn't look any more special than an MPS - never driven either to compare though, I prefer the Subaru options
I'll take this one over the Sapphire from the same year thanks:

Maybe so but when you compare it to other cars of its era ie the mazda 626 it was lots better & the first real sleeper car.To compare the Cosworth to any car 20 years younger is just silly imho might as well compare a model t Ford to a mondeo!!
Twice recently I was in the financial position to buy the car of my teenage dreams, a 3 door cosworth, or later 4x4 sapphire, or an escort coswart, or maybe a cavalier turbo (a mate was actually selling a well looked after example with 280 bhp and locked centre diff) which was the car I dreamt of in my late 20's.
In my 30's I dreamt of a Delta Integrale.
So back to my financial position. The first time I spent the money on a bathroom, paying off some mortgage, a pointless financial investment, and some children's bonus bonds and a £900 astra mk3.
The second time I spent £5K on a Honda 2.2 ictdi accord and put £10K into savings.
I suspect that is because I know that owning any one of my dream cars would be a nightmare, so I went for something that is sensible (ish)

Ran a 400bhp MA Developments tuned Sapphire for a couple of years. I used it to take 4 of us to football up north most weekends. Absolutely brilliant car all things considered. It was a very low mileage version granted and well looked after which helps. But most things were fixable yourself. Easy to service on your own (even for the big service) and a car that raised more than a few eyebrows from people because of its standard looks and blistering performance. I did over 40,000 miles in it. And I would buy it back in heartbeat if I was looking to start a collection of my all time favourite cars I owned.
I do see the merits of the MPS in the modern world if you have the cash to run it, but it isn't in the same ball park as the cosworth to be honest. They are from completely different generations and reasons for buying either are very different. People that buy them do so because for many its the childhood dream, for others its the heritage but I am pretty sure almost none are purchased for the same reasons as an MPS so the don't really compare well.

Unfortunatly for you buying a mint 3dr cossie for 10k a few years back would have earned a hell of alot more than 10k in savings over that time. I have no nightmares owning one, Ive enjoyed the last 10-11years of ownership tbh.The second time I spent £5K on a Honda 2.2 ictdi accord and put £10K into savings.

Agree with Baronyx, surely a "real alternative" to the Sapph is a.n.other 4x4 turbo like an Evo or Impreza WRX/STI??
Yup
that's what I was thinking when I opened this thread.OP - 6 MPS is a lot of car for the money, I agree, and a great purchase if you're after a car that ticks 'those' boxes. However, it's not really applicable here..

Cosworth - a hero of a car, on bedroom walls of the 80s and 90s, still turns heads today.
MPS - Anonymous, generic saloon...
I think the point is an unmodified 4-door Sierra is a pretty anonymous generic saloon too. Would it still have hero satus without the Cosworth name, Sierra MPS anybody?MPS - Anonymous, generic saloon...
In terms of reputation I agree the WRX or EVO is a better comparison but as a modern equivalent of car itself the MPS is probably a fair enough call too.
Interestingly Sierras (including Cossies) were never that common or popular down this side of the world - I guess Ford lovers already had straight-6 and V8 Falcons to choose from, and turbo 4wd lovers had the Jap options (Legacy RS, Galant VR4 etc).

The 'Cosworth' badge.
I would take an MPS over one given the option. I wanted a Sapphire Cosworth when i was younger.
No desire to own one any more.
I would take any of the more obscure/common/mundane Jap performance cars over one. I did test a Black MPS a few years ago , They are quick.
