2005 Mazda 6, poor 1st & second change when cold
Discussion
Posting on behalf of a friend.
His car has done 60k miles, and is the 2 litre petrol with the 6 speed gearbox.
When changing changing into 1st and 2nd when cold its very notchy, once warm its fine.
We were thinking about changing the gearbox oil but I wasn't sure if like some other higher mileage changes people were using a slightly different viscosity to standard.
Any advice would be appreciated

How long has he owned the car? Has it done it since he took ownership?
If yes, I would say it's the viscosity. I had the same issue on my Accord 5-speed manual, notchy when cold. I simply drained the oil and refilled with automatic transmission fluid. It's now as smooth as a babies bum, even when stone cold.

Seeing as it's the cheapest and easiest option, I would try that first yes. If it also done it when warm, this would lead to something more mechanical, i.e synchros or clutch, but you say it only does it from cold so I wouldn't guess it's mechanical.
Good luck, and let us know if it solves the problem.

I have a 2010 6 sport 185 as company car.
Had the same problem, this soon turned into car slipping out of gear(second gear in particular) Generally always when you came off and pushed back on the accelerator.
Result- New Gearbox. They told me it was a common fault with the 6 speed boxes.
