Mitsi 3000gt/GTO or Supra or 300zx
Discussion
All turbo of course!
Looking for new toy at the moment and somehow or other have found myself coming to look at these older Japs as offering a fair bit of bang for not a lot of buck.
Supra's seem to have the biggest price tags on them - Mitsi's seem ludicrously cheap, haven't quite worked out zx pricing yet.
A lot of Supra's are kitted and look all the better for it - kitted GTO's seem to be non existent, an d there are a few zx's I've seen. there's a lovely kitted ZX on fleabay but the price seems way OTT (considering I've seen a wide bodied supercharged 350Z for the same money!!)
If I'm reading right I should expect to potentially throw away the GTO if it goes wrong as they have more electrickery than the whole of Amstrad/Commodore/Sinclair put together! But then it's cheap to start with.
I dunno - any thoughts? Should I just let this fast and furious moment pass?

A test drive in either would be good. You'll be hooked.
I've had my GTO TT for nearly 8 years, so I'm biased, but my brother had a Supra turbo and swears it was the best car he ever owned.
Occasionally late GTOs appear in the For Sale section of GTOUK. These are good bets as members tend to have service histories as long as your arm.

Embrace the Fast and the Furious! I am also biased, having owned my GTO for almost 2 years and loving it. Don't buy a cheap one, as it will break expensively. If you buy a well maintained one, you will be surprised at how reliable they are.
Mine has never broken down on me, left me stranded etc. Not to say there arent niggles, but show me a 16 yr old car that doesn't have niggles. I have kept her maintained and maintained properly.
Unfortunately, any car of this age is likely to be a money pit, Supra, ZX, or GTO so as long as you go in with your eyes open and know that you may have to either spend £££ to keep it going or throw it away, you are golden.

I'm scarred of RX7's cos of the wankel and rebuild costs etc. - all the ads seem to have rebuilds and start going on about strange compression figures like "8"!! Don't deny there's some stunners out there though.
The skyline just doesn't do it for me I'm afraid - I know it's a capable car and everything but just don't like the looks

I owned a 300ZX Twin Turbo for several years and it's been one of the most reliable cars I've owned.
Real head turner and plenty fast enough to see of most things on the road.
There are some horrendous kits out there for them though.
My suggestion would be a well maintained UK example (check rust!!) and slap a 99spec bumper and rear spoiler on plus 99spec rear lights.
Makes the car so much more up to date.
Personal preference and all that but, I really dislike the lines on the GTO and Supra prices always seem high.
Good luck with what ever you choose, something different and will put a smile on your face when those turbos spool up!

Yes GTO's are cheap to buy, but you tend to get what you paid for ie spend higher and in general get a better car. They have alot of electrical gubbins as you mentioned but tbh they are no where near as complicated as a modern car.....how can it be, its over two decades old lol. The later cars lost some of the gimmicks, such as electronically controlled suspension, active spoilers etc.
GTO is the import model, tends to come with more toys, but smaller turbo's. The UK 3000gt model has larger turbo's and, if fitted, better quality leather over the JDM version.
Things to look out for, engine knock from cold....normaly big end or mains bearings. Have a look underneath and check the sump condition...many get dented and in return starve the oil pick up pipe as it sits very close to the bottom of the pan. Have a look on www.gtooc.org for some ideas....
Here's mine, owned it for nearly three years now...used as my daily driver. This one is one of three hundred limited edition 'Special Versions' released in 1992.

lol nah Mark is ok mate....he pays for the forum from his own pocket, so he cant be all that bad.
If your still undecided what car to get come the end of April, then you may wanna get your self along to Eurospec as Im organising a rolling road day there. Got around 25 GTO's down for it so far...should be a good day.

That looks amazing, I'm a total sucker for superfluous dials and gubbins! What do they all do?
lol they aint really superfluous, they all have a job....apart from the top left unit (lit up green), thats quite gimmicky...its a 'power meter'. The one to the right of it is the boost controller...next down is the standard heating/air con controls. Beneath that and to the left is a fuel controller (intercepts the MAF to ECU signal wire and acts like a piggy back), the round dial to the right of that is the wideband gauge...need that to keep an eye on its neighbour lol. Beneath all that lot is the most vital part, a radio.Gassing Station | Japanese Chat | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
