Yaris t-sport hesitance?

I noticed a problem after bit of exuberance earlier on today.
After 3000rpm and there on afterwards the engine seems like it is hesitating?
Usually 3000rpm is the 'step' where the vvti starts to do its thing and give a bit of a shove all the way up to the redline. Now when i accelerate it reaches 3000 and just seems to bottle it, and it doesnt sound quite like it did before. It isnt mis-firing (it has misfired before and sounded like a poorly impreza) but just isnt producing the power it should

Has anyone got any ideas?

Checked the oil earlier and its about 3/4 full

Might be worth giving the MAF a clean?

Clean the MAF sensor and throttle body, check for clogged/split breather pipes.
