Current toy is a Caterham SV with R400 spec engine, love it to bits. "But" the other half is not a big fan.

So may consider a move once this summer is over, for somthing a bit more civilised but still RWD fun,

I have always liked the MX5 Mk1 and one with the BBR upgrade could be what i'm after but the Mk1's production ended in 1997 I think? so the dreaded tin worm could be an isue.

As for the Honda S2000, the only thing I have read about them is that there on the limit handling can be a bit scary.

Your thought please

Don't worry about tin worm on MK1s. There are plenty of clean ones around and if it does suffer from rot in the sills it is easily fixed.

Having said that your Mrs would probably prefer the comfort of the S2000 more.

BBRs will be hard to find, I can't say I know how hard it will be to find a good one on top of that. Might be an idea to look around for an MX-5 with an aftermarket turbo already fitted/mapped.

I'd personally go S2000, even though I've heard similar about the handling at 10/10.

Thought about an MR-2 Turbo?

Firstly, S2000s are no more comfortable or spacious inside than the '5. They are more solid and safe, so your good lady will like that.

BBR are still doing conversions, and there are loads of turbo'd mk1s around. Coming from the Caterham I also think you will be horrified by the lack of feel in the S2000. The '5 will be much better in that respect.

However, as an ownership proposition the S2000 is hard to beat.

Thank for you input guys............I'm still in a quandry over this.

As for the Caterham it's up there with the best of the driving tools (pardon the pun) so what ever I change it for is always going to feel a bit wooly and the other thing about the seven is allmost zero depriciation, plus I have the rest of the summer to convert the wife argue

MX5 for about £2K-£3K take it to BBR for turbo/suspention convertion and any other bits and bobs that need done total outlay about £12K.

In the classifieds I can get an 09 S2000 with under 10,000 on the clock for £17k.

Somone has just thrown me a curved ball and said there is a company that do Honda Type R convertions for the Lotus Elise S1, somthing else to look at me thinks !

Thanks for the heads up re road tax.......I was unaware of the poor emitions on the S2000, I asumed it was just the larger capacity cars 2.5L and above that got hit with the £460 tax, is a shocking amout to pay and I never will( tight Scotsman) weekend toy or not !!!

If your budget stretches to £17k, there are far better cars to be had than the S2000.

The Honda'd Elise sounds mighty tempting to me!

Just watch out on the run out S2000's. The 09 versions in white had a number of engines going pop.

What about an Mx5 rev 3 for £5K and then fitting the cosworth developed supercharger?

Sorry, current BMW's, I don't think so.......They did make some very nice cars. 2002 Tii or Turbo, CSL Batmobile and the first M saloon car the M535..
