Hi, my wife has just got herself an mr2 n/a, 1990. Great car but I have a few questions.
It has two stupidly big exhausts. Does this not reduce power ?
And on the drivers door frame there is a little handle, it rotates and has an 'r' on it. What does it do ?

Any help Grateful.

Exhaust - not necessarily. A good system might even do the opposite.
Handle - seat belt release lever. http://willyfogg.com/p174702767/1992_toyota_mr2_do...

Don't be fooled by the end cans on the exhaust, they might be massive tips but they can still have peashooter pipework behind them.

Is it NA or Turbo?

The majority of decent aftermarket systems have 2.5" pipework which is larger than OEM. Some, including mine, have 3" tubing. The tips, as you say, are often bigger - 4" or 4.5" are not unusual.

HUGE exhaust - like the cheap crap ones on ebay with 4 inch tips - will decrease car's performance. Stock exhaust is probably the best choice, but hard to find. Baffles will make it better.

Thanks, I'm going to change the exhaust for an original. I already have a noisy car on the drive.. She whines about that, so wants this car as quiet as possible.

Calling an exhaust HUGE by reference to tip size is a fundamental error. They are frequently bigger than the pipe size, are largely cosmetic, and have negligible or no effect on performance. The issue with e-bay is that many are poor copies of established aftermarket designs. What matters is the optimum pipe diameter and the design of the can(s) - baffles/sound absorbing material/gas pathway.

For someone wanting a stock exhaust one avenue would be asking on the owners clubs if anyone is interested in a swap. The usual route is in the opposite direction.

That is true - I should have been clearer. The cheap "japspeed" exhausts on ebay do more harm then good. On my N/A I had a blueflame exhaust which was well made and not too loud, good stock replacement.

A Blitz Nur Spec might be considered a HUGGGEE exhaust, but that would be for performance gains more than anything else...

Not on an NA. Turbo where you want it as big as possible really, yes but NA, bucket exhausts do nothing for performance.

Standard sounds rotten too to my ears.

Skytune do the best Mk2 exhausts i've ever heard.

Haha, good point. I'd forgotten about that.

Skytune eh? I've never heard of such...

I have thought about sticking a blueflame on mine when money permits. I massively dislike how you can barely hear the engine above the windnoise with the roof off. frown

Stock exhaust best? Is it bks.

I had a turbo with an HKS Super Dragger. Wonderful bit of kit. An american company called Berk Tech made copies which are very good.

netiher are cheap.

I would look for any Japanese brand you can get on MR2OC / IMOC / EBAY for a good price.

yes I have one. The only slight downside is that it's made of aluminised steel not SUS304 stainless.
I currently have Blitz Nur Spec R which is stainless throughout. The quality and workmanship is outstanding.
Aesthtically I prefer a twin exit but the Nur Spec is definitely staying put!

I know several people who have these.

I really like the JanSpeed system on my car. It has a nice tone when you push it, but is very quiet when cruising at any speed. It isnt huge, and looks better (IMO) than OEM:

Don't think you can get them new now, but you do see them pop up on the OC's or ebay every so often.

My friend has a BlueFlame (or was it Mongoose?) on is, and it was louder all the time than mine. Sounded good, but I dont think I would have wanted to drive a long distance with it.

Suggest you feel the weight of a standard exhaust. Fairly sure it's made out of one lump of granite...

Compared to the aftermarket decat and exhaust I put on which you can lift with a couple of fingers.

Is the standard better then? Last longer due to thicker-gauge steel or stainless steel?

If you don't gain anything from a more free flowing exhaust, you'll at least definitely lose weight. My car was transformed after, nearly the equivalent of whether there's a passenger or not.

I bought my stainless second hand, it had been on some blokes v6 conversion for 3 years and it's in great condition.
