I'm getting rid of my Ep3 type R soon, and a friend will be selling their Evo8 fq300 which is modified to 450bhp as they have ordered the new R35 GTR.

I'm currently averaging 18mpg in my civic. But maintainance is cheap, and nothing has gone wrong with the Honda. I wanted to know roughly what people are budgeting yearly for their Evos?

I know fuel will be about 13-18mpg, I don't need four seats. Think the 4wd will be handy, the car will be a daily driver!

You will get mixed reviews on this Question.

But Fact is, EVO ownership is expensive. It will differ from year to year in costs, but servicing is not cheap on them. They are fantastic cars, but for what they cost to run, i never got the same enjoyment factor from my EVO as i did from my DC5 or FD2, and now my Elise R SC.

A must to own one at some point in your Life, but be prepared for bigger costs in everything evo related. Fuel gauge will shock you.lol.

Fuel usage wont be good, they arent economical. Expect 28mpg best case on a motorway run, 15mpg around town.

Check the spec of the car if its 450bhp, if its on the standard con rods then its a potential time bomb, 400bhp is accepted as the "safe" limit of the standard rods, but some are lucky and some arent.

To be honest though, it could be bullst, many cars are listed as "this much bhp" but no proof.

They arent that expensive to service... The short 4500 mile services are pretty much oils and filters which can be done by your self if you are capable. Bigger services can be done at a reasonable price by a specialist.


Join the MLR, worth the joining fee if you buy an evo for the knowledge.

Repeat answers really

450Hp - If its genuine then it should have forged internals now. It has obviously been remapped so there is no way of knowing how the fuelling will create your MPG. I would expect an average of 18mpg with that power level.

Mine has Mitsi history and the 4500 service was charged at £120-£180 depending on consumables.

AYC pumps are known to need rebuilds at some point, this costs from £200-£600, but you may never need it. Ask if its running the standard Diff or the RS diff as the RS diff doesnt use the AYC system and is often changed.
Fuel pump will be a Walbro upgrade with that power. Exhaust will probably be de-catted so ask for the cat, youll need it for MOT's

You will love the turbo power adjustments, £200 gets you a remap and you can literally choose your power level.

They like eating tyres because of the 4x4 system and the fact they grip so well you get used to pushing it thru corners. Dont skimp on rubber, I have conti's but will prob try GY F1 next time. Expect 8000-10,000 miles per set.

I bought my 8 6 weeks ago.

Paid less than market value as I knew it needed something doing to it.

I've averaged 22mpg so far on mainly short journeys.

So far i've had it inspected, serviced (9000 miles), some bits and bobs done, a new prop shaft and about to have some surface rust treated and the car undersealed.

This little lot will have cost me just shy of 700 quid.

I'll need new tyres in the next 6 months, which is going to sting a little bit.

The previous owner had fitted brand new pads and discs before i bought it, unfortunately he went for a cheap ebay special - they're st. So when fund allow i'll need to change those as well. Anyone reading can suggest a decent setup for normal road use it'd be appreciated!

Insurance in a grotty area of sheffield comes in at just over 700 quid, (full ncb, 30yr of age, zero points)

Luckily its had stage one mods done so i don't need to spend too much on this, just refit a cat.

Coming from a mk1 mx5 it was a bit of a shock, both in style of driving, and in power and just about everything. But its an amazing car, with performance that you really can't fully exploit on the road.

Check if the ACD/AYC pump has been done yet. They do fail quite frequently, and it can be costly to sort.

TBH As an all weather toy they're epic bits of kit, but as a daily they suck. They're the car equivalent of a Collie dog always wanting to play and never relaxing to be around.

If you can afford to, I'd get a snotter as well for the daily drive.

Two piece discs up front (Performance Friction ideally, but Godspeed are significantly cheaper), oem discs rear and Carbotech XP10 pads all around.

The XP8 pads are supposed to be more road orientated (XP10s are track orientated), but by many accounts the squeal on the XP8s is terrible and I've run XP10s for years on the road and can't fault them.

I'd add to the above that you need to be very wary of the clutch on any second hand Evo, let alone on one with 450 bhp. The oem unit is very weak and will fail very quickly if the car is launched. To replace it is a minimum of £600 and to put a twin plate that can handle that kind of power is around £1,200 to £1,500 all in.

Anyway - Do Not put the cat back on. The engine warning light will come on constantly, you'll lose alot of power and probably trash the cat as the fuelling will be wrong. Most people (myself including, are taking the cats off). If you put the cat on you must re-map it to a lower spec and turn on the lambda sensor again.
At MOT time just take the cat with you and ask the garage to pop it on for the test (4 bolts)

Cant exploit on the road......your not trying hard enough .....ha ha ha haha

Putting a cat back on won't trigger the engine light - as no JDM or FQ VIII has a lambda sensor after the cat and the only VIII that does (the 260) would have had it disabled/tricked as part of the original decatting.

Most people do decat their Evo though - it's very cheap for a noticeable performance gain with limited downsides.
